700R4 Pump Cover: Fron Seal Mating Surface 'Nicked'
I just pulled the front seal off of my transmission. Found that there is what appears to be a nick or chunk out of the flat surface that the seal fits against in the front cover. It is just adjacent to the front pump fluid hole. Shouldn't this surface be good and flat to provide a good seal? My thoughts are that it has compromised the front seal (and is going to cost me dearly to replace!).
Please advise. I'll try to post a reduced picture here in a few minutes.

Ted,
I can`t really tell from the picture but the mateing surface on the seal is metal so a small nick should not hurt. One thing I always do is apply a small bead of high temp rtv on the seal before insallation. This should take care of any small nicks. Also check with a trans supply house[not trans repair shop]for a used front pump housing if you would feel better about it.Should be cheap. If you go that route, after you assemble the pump take it to a shop and have them center the pump housings and tighten the bolts.Takes a special tool or a REAL BIG hose clamp.
Joe :chevy PS:the bolt seals can be bought separately,an easy way to remove the pump is drop the pan and you can see the rear of the pump, tap it and it will come right out

Ted- I can't really tell anything from the pic but keep in mind there is almost 300psi going through the pump so any bad sealing surfaces could cause a leak, that's just my uneducated guess, mine was about 290lbs of pressure.
