Default Thirty Year Old Florida Plate Authenicated

Florida has a law that a car that is 30 years old can have a plate of the same year as the car.

So, I advertised in the newspaper for a 1972 plate from the county in which I live. On the second day of my ad, I got a call from someone who only lived a few miles from me. The plate number is 2-69421.

The story gets longer now. Florida has 67 counties. In the old days, the plate numbers begin with a county number depending on the population of the county. My county is the second largest in the State, so all plates begin with the number 2. Of course, as time slipped away the State was overwhelmed with cars and they had to switch to three letters and three numbers for more possible combinations to accomadate all the cars.

Anyway, after a long process, I finally got my 1972 plate authenicated for use on my 72 Vette. I must be a legitimate nut to go to all of this trouble for such a small thing.

I think the YOM plates look good. I am running them on my 67. They cost an extra $15.00 a year to run. I also have them on a 27 T and my dad's 28 A. I bought these from a man in his 80's that collected plates for 50 years. I bought for all my old vehicles 71 vette, 50 Chevy truck, 49 Chevy car. Wished I had bought more and started my own collection. His prices were dirt cheap and he was a blast to talk to about old plates. He had a complete set of TX plates for his own collection. Don't know if he is still alive.

Its a common practice here in Fla. I've got two cars ('68 & '70) with same year tags. I was at Super Chevy in Gainesville in Oct & probably 1 out of 3 cars in the show had same year tags.

I think you may be mistaken on the 30 year old requirement or maybe they've changed it because I've had my '70 tag on my '70 car since '95!! I think any car that qualifies for the state issued "collectible" tag (25 years or older) can register a YOM tag.

I was lucky, when I bought my 68 I was also given the original 1968 plates the first owner used on the car :D I was going to use them but decided to go with custom plates instead.I,m going to frame them and hang them in my garage

It's not unusual for me to screw-up the details. I did not realize it was a common practice. I have only seen one other car. Maybe I should get out more. :)

This is quite common in Texas. It can be used with an Antique vehicle registration: 5 years for about 50 bucks, and no annual inspections! I already have a set for my '79 when it comes eligible next year

So now I'm torn between 1967 plates and my new personalized plate. Which to use when the rebuild is complete?

The following is an example of the "special" 1967 Ontario plate issued to celebrate Canada's 100th birthday. (the 11*11 number is not mine though).

This personalized plate is mine.

I did that with my '69 in Washington state, when my car turned 30. Here, you just pay to register the plates to that car, and never have to license the car again.

OHSIXX and MDSMITH,

I see 71 tags for sale at different shows and always wondered what you need to do to RE-register them. What was the procedure? Any special paperwork??? or just take then to the courthouse and transfer them over?
Do you remember the cost?

Thanks!!

shoptek: I received two sets of instructions that were kinda conflicting.

The first thing I did was to go to the local DMV. Just tell them what you want and request DMV Procedure #25. The instructions contained in the Procedure are a little bit dated. So, I ended up doing a search for the Department of Florida Motor Vehicels and e-mailing them. That even added to the confusion.

So, here is what I eventually did: I wrote a short letter including my full name and mailing address as well as my driver's license number. They also want to know if you are a Male or Female. Use M and F and include data of both if jointly owned.

I attached a copy of the title, copy of the current registration, and proof of insurance. I included a check for $20.60. You must also mail the plate to them for authentication.

The mailing address: Direct Mail and Title correction Section, Bureau of titles and Registration, Neil Kirkman Building, Mail Stop #72, Tallahassee, Florida, 32339-0620.

If the current license plate is not in the renewal period the fee is $20.60.

If the current license plate is in the renewal period the fee is $36.60.

If the vehicle is 30 years of age or older the $100 Initial Registration Fee is not required.

The plate must be the same year as the car and you must mail it to them.

If you do all of this everything will work out. I actually got the plate back from Tallahassee in less than a week. :)

OHSIXX,
Thanks for the info!!!!!!!!! I'm going to pick up a tag at the NCRS show in Orlando next month. If I remember, there is a vendor that sells them for about $20.
Thanks again,
Marc

I have a brand new never issued plate I got at a show about ten years ago. It is a black plate with silver numbers with 67 68 in each corner. My DMV told me that the rule was any car older that 20 years can register a plate from the year of manufacturer. It’s pretty common around here.
