I would like to change to the Edelbrock Valve Covers which uses the PCV hole in the passenger's side cover as the oil filler hole capped with a breather. Therefore, the hose going from the PCV to the bottom of the air cleaner is eliminated.

Seems as if I read a rather technical discussion about this sometime ago, but cannot remember the details.

So, is there a downside to just using a breather?

Without the pcv you will get burning oil fumes coming out the breather. The pcv sucks air through the engine with air coming in the breather. I would not recomend running without a pcv unless you like fumes. :U

I think if you mean that you intend to hook up the PCV as normal, but rather than the factory style breather (vent tube up to air filter) you plan to run the open style breather, you'll be fine. This will properly vent the crankcase. If Fevre (rather than me) understood you correctly than I support his advice. You definitely need a functioning PCV system. I have the open style breather on pass. side, combined with the stock PCV fitting and hose on the driver side.

Straighten me out. All I want to do is eliminate the hose to the air cleaner and put a breather in the passenger's side hole.

Any downside?

YES!!

Check the breather that you buy. I found one at a Pep boys that was a nice looking chrome unit that had a rounded top and breather holes at the bottom around the mounting tube. Inside was this nice white foam that was to act as the filter.

However, the design of it was wrong. When they punched the opening in the mounting tube up into the breather element, it pushed the white foam away from the holes for the incoming air. What that did was to let completely unfiltered air to enter your engine crankcase.

Now imagine running down a gravel road or driving in a dust storm (common out here in the late summer), and that your engine is sucking in un-filtered air directly into the crankcase --- :U

Yes, you can run a breather instead of the factory air pipe, but make sure it is a quality breather that filters all the air.

P.S. Some states do not allow the change from the air tube from the valve cover to the air cleaner housing. It is considered part of the emissions system and I got dinged on it last year.

Sorry, I read what I wanted to, not what you wrote. :bb No problem getting rid of the vent tube by adding a breather, just make sure you plug the hole in base or change the base.

BSeery, unless I'm mistaken Mark is planning on running with an Edelbrock set up similar to mine using the "Elite" aluminum series of products, so he will be getting a quality item...

BTW, I put on the Edelbrock 14 inch Air Cleaner yesterday. Gosh! It changed the entire complexion of the engine compartment. So, the valve covers will be iceing on the cake. Again, thanks! Mark
