Default Transmission Leak

It has been probably 2 months since I have had the engine running. This morning I went out in the garage and there was a trail of transmission fluid heading for the garage drain. I looked under the car and noticed that it is dripping off the speedometer cable connection. Two weeks ago I disconnected the speedo cable at the speedo head because I am installing cruise control. Because it is disconnected at the speedo end does it make any sense that more fluid can run back into the cable casing?
