Dunlop SP Sport 8000's...????
I'm going to get betting new tires for the 74 soon. And I would like to have a set of directionals on it. These Dunlop SP Sport 8000's seem like they would work pretty well. The size I would be getting (on all 4 wheels) would be 245/50ZR15. Are these tires any decent?? What about Dunlop brand in general. It's got an 8.7 on dry traction and 7.5 for wet traction. That seems to be pretty good.....And sugestions???
What TireRack.com says..
The SP Sport 8000 is ideal for today's most aggressive sports cars. Its directional tread pattern offers all-out performance and handling, plus quiet ride comfort. To maximize wet handling confidence and resist hydroplaning the SP Sport 8000's wide circumferential grooves have been designed with nearly vertical "walls". This square shape maintains the tires outstanding wet road performance right up to the final stages of treadwear. To provide exceptional dry steering stability, the tread pattern has extremely rigid blocks. These rigid blocks greatly reduce tread squirm and distortion, offering a high degree of control during hard cornering. Minimizing irregular treadwear is also an important part of the design of the SP Sport 8000. A common problem with wide, low profile tires is uneven wear in the center of the tread. This problem is caused by unnecessary distortion of the tire's center and uneven contact pressure. The SP Sport 8000 features a tread surface formed around three continuous radii, so even contact pressure is obtained when the tread is fully loaded. Each size has been individually tuned for long, even treadwear.

Sounds like a pretty short tire to me......you'll lower the car a bit more and they may not fill the wheel well.
That being said, my brother has them in a 275/40/17 on his '85 and likes them.

I had the Sp8000s on my Eclipse. Actually they were on my Nissan Z wheels that I bought (225/50-16) and I must say I was not impressed with them. They didn't grip well at all. Granted, they weren't brand new so new they may be good, but old they were really bad. I tossed them before their treadwear necessitated it. Got Potenza RE730s (same as I got on the Vette) in the same size and am VERY pleased. :) MUCH more grip. I must admit I didn't research the SP8000s, so they may be better on the track, etc, but for the VERY spirited street driving I did on the Front-Wheel-Drive Eclipse they didn't impress me at all. So take that with the MANY grains of salt that it deserves. ;)
good luck!

I'd like the directionals on my Vette in nothing SMALL then 245. And those dunlops were the only ones that were wide enough and would fit on 15'' rims...

I've got them on mine, very sticky indeed. I think Gkull runs them as well. I have been very pleased with them as far as sunny cruising and weekend warrior tire. They will probably wear out quick but in my application I don't really care that much, dry grip and price were the two major factors and they do very well in both those reguards. I have no idea how they are with the 15" rims given the taller sidewall, but with 16's I was impressed.

Re: Dunlop SP Sport 8000's...???? (73 LS-4)
Thats what i've been running for over a year now with plenty of tread left. They are very solid tires all around, never tried in ice though. I autocross rain or shine and they're very predictable and grip very nicely. My only complaint is that they don't fill the fender up that much.
