PlastiDip'd Chrome C7 Rims - PIC HEAVY
Bought 6 cans of PlastiDip a few weeks ago, finally decided to use them.
Started the job Friday night by removing the wheels and giving a thorough cleaning with Simple Green twice and then wiped them down with IPA just to make double sure there was no wax or other type of residue on the wheels. Made sure they were dry as a bone prior to starting the job as well. Inserted large index cards in the lip between the rim and tire, you don't need to do this as the PlastiDip will peel right off if you get it on the tire but I just decided to be a bit neater and doing so also corralled some of the overspray.
I started with 2 light coats and then started applying thicker coats....I applied a total of 6 coats on the wheels...I also bought Glossifier but decided to leave them flat at this time. I made sure to cover the valve stems with masking tape and also put washers where the lug nuts meet the rim so as to not have any PlastiDip there to rip when tightening down the lug nuts (which are also black now as well as the valve stem caps which were originally silver)
Additionally I removed and took apart the rim center caps and added 3M Carbon fiber vinyl to them and reassembled them...
The above are the words...below are the pictures...starting with before..then the work...then the before and after....hope you like

Here's how I look at it...the black not only changes the look but preserves the chrome underneath so when I go to sell or trade I can remove and have pristine chrome wheels...
I mean doing this is like taking out a properly working stock shifter and putting in an MGW shifter...which will be my next mod in a few weeks...

Those side by side pics really shows how ugly and out of place chrome looks on the C7. The black wheels ties in with the black fender accent, the black pillers, black rear portion of the rear bumper, black front portion of the front bumper, the black hood scoop, rear quart panel scoops and if you tint the windows, black windows, Black headlights. It really mades the car "as one" instead of some tacked on chrome wheels. That looks is straight out of the pep boys catalog now.
