Default Thread size?

I need a helicoil for my 68 windshield wiper cover. I'm working away from home and trying to use the time to gather up parts. For the life of me I can't remember the size of those side bolts for mounting the cover. You know the ones with the collar. Anybody know the thread size???

The paint shop broke two bolts on my viper cover when they removed it. As I couldn't find helicoils at any local shop I tried something else. I drilled out the old bolts with a slightly small drill bit and just re-tapped the holes. Surprisingly it worked ok... The thread size is 18-24UNC.

Tomi,

Mine is stripped there is nothing to tap. Do you think the bolt is 10-24??

18-24 don't sound right???

There is no such thing as a 18-24, there is a #10-24 and a 5/16-18, you should be able to differentiate easily between these two sizes (the #10 will measure approx 0.19" in diam and the 5/16 will be... you guessed it 5/16"

My bad, sorry! I read it from the side of the tap and what looked like 8 is actually 0. so it was 10-24 tap I used.

OK, if it's a #10-24 you'd drill out the hole to a #5 drill (which is 0.2055") for a helicoil. If your hole is larger than that you'll need to use a threaded insert (different from a helicoil) and drill the hole to 0.2570 (a "F" drill) and tap it 5/16-18. Hope that helps..

Thanks guys! I shoulda brought the bolt with me. I thought it was 10-24 but wanted to make sure it wasn't a fine thread 10-32. Want to get the helicoil while I'm in the big city.
