Default temp gage not working

temp gage not working. also, gage lights are out. i replaced the water temp sender with no results. any ideas on my 81?

With the ignition on, disconnect the wire from the temp sending unit and touch it to metal (creating a ground). If the gauge is working it should peg all the way to the right. If not, you have another problem. If all your lights in the instrument cluster are also out, you have a wiring problem. Possibly a ground wire. Sometimes electrical can be easy, but usually its not! Start from the easiest to the most difficult. Check your fuses, ground wires and harness connection to the instrument cluster. These things usually end up being a bad or disconnected ground. But old wiring can be tricky, especially a short inside one of the old wires. Have fun :)
