Got new master cylinder, should it be painted?
Just got in a new MC for my '69. It looks like the body of the unit is untreated iron or steel. Grayish in color. Will it rust if left like this? If so, any ideas on what brand or type of paint I should use? Also, I'm guessing black would be appropriate?
Thanks...

Origionally the master cyl was painted a cheepo semi gloss black-laquer or enamel. Probably a fast dry enamel. It was painted before the machine process so all machined surfaces are natural. NCRS will {buy it} if a little rust is on the machined surfaces. Hope this helps. Thad

Yes, it will rust if left as is. I found a 'cast iron grey' high temp paint (spray can) at autozone that worked great. It even holds up to short exposures of brake fluid. Best thing is it looks just like it is unpainted, except no rust.

As suggested, brake fluid is a great paint remover...so....
that applies to DOT3-4 types....now I"m not sure about DOT5, it being a silicone fluid, and seems to permeate the iron, it may stop rust, mine was allready surface brown, so I"m not sure if it will stop rust staining or not...

Does any one know if Powder Coating the master cylinder would do the trick. Is powder coating brake fluid resisent? I allready know that carb cleaner will eat powder coating.

I can also atest to the fact that carb cleaner will take the shine out of the ceramic coating on headers. Smooth move on my part eh? So I would advise against ceramic coating on the master cylinder

On any cast iron parts that I have I first give them a couple coats of PPG DP-40 epoxy primer and then top coat them with Eastwoods Cast Iron Gray spray paint. I have a master cylinder on my 68 Rally Sport that looks like a brand new master cylinder and I painted it like this 10 years ago. The Spray Gray paint by itself works pretty good on raw cast iron but the Epoxy primer really seals it up and protects the cast iron from rusting.

Re: DOT5 fluid. There are two types - silicon & the normal paint eating sort. The Silicon fluid is a lot more expensive than the normal sort. The silicon fluid won't touch paint (in fact, it really shines it up!) but a lot of people have been caught out by thinking that they'd bought Silicon DOT5 only to find that they hadn't when it melted their paint :(
If you need to know if normal brake fluid eats powder coat, IM me & I'll try it on a few powder coated spares that I've got lying around.

It will most definitely rust. Clear paint will yellow after a time as well. If I want to keep something natural metal, I use Future Floor Finish shot thru an air brush. It's acrylic, won't yellow and is very tough. The only draw back is it is a bit shiny.

If you like the gray, use manifold dressing--that's the paste they sell (Eckler's, etc.) to dress up your exhaust manifold. Looks good, impervious to everything, and you can just rub it on with a paper towel.
