What the $*$@#& is wrong with my tach, stuck at 500 rpms
I recently installeda MSD tach drive distributor so my stock tach would work. I noticed the other day the tach is stuck at 500 rpms when the car is running or not. The car usually idles at around 850. I pulled the cable of the back of the tach and made sure it was in the distributor far enough, before tightening it back down. When I unplugged the cable from the tach it did fall back down to 0 rpms, but when I started the car back up it jumped to 500 and was stuck again. What is wrong :chevy

Check with Lars for some ideas on what may be wrong. I have my distributor pulled right now to install a new tach drive gear. I am not an expert, but have you checked the main distributor shaft and drive gear for wear? Also, what shape is your thrust button in? It's located at the end of the housing that the cross gear screws into and takes up any end play in the cross gear. Again, I would send Lars an email and she what he has to say.

There's a little brass thingy...I don't know any other word to describe it. It goes over the end of the cable that fits into the tach drive.
I had the same problem...tach sat at some odd RPM, and then I found this little "extra" part. I went, HMMMM...and put it in there, and my tach started working.
I'd check to make sure that you have the brass adapter peice in there. :smash:

Thanks for the help guys,
Rainman what do you mean you found a brass thingy, where did you find it, did you buy it or was it something else.

I would think the problem is in the tach. Even if the cable is broke or disconnected, the tach should still fall back to O without any motion from cable.

69, Even though I don't have a cable driven tach like your car, my tach was also stuck at whatever RPM. I changed the tach board about a year ago so I was pissed. I removed the bezel and gave the needle a little push around the clock. It solved the problem. Maybe there is a slight obstruction in yours also. Just a thought. Good Luck, L8TER, Paul.

It was in the MSD distributor box. I think it was in one of those baggies with the wires and stuff.

Fixed, the problem was the cable, when stuck too far into the tach the part that engages the drive mechanism (in the tach) does not hook up to the cable. :chevy
Now when I replace the rear end this weekend we'll be back on the road.
