Hi all,

while installing new plugs /wires on my 81....ran into problem.
While removing the starter to get to the spark plug wire shield on the passenger side,
the cable that is bolted to the solenoid snapped off the solenoid like a twig.
I was able to remove the starter and solenoid...but am wondering now if this may have been some of my engine cutting out problems.
The plastic housing and bolt shaft was very dried out and brittle and snapped with little effort.
I wonder if I havent had a good positive hookeup for some time....hmmmm:confused:

Anyhow - can the solenoid be purchased separately?..and/or should I just go ahead and get
a whole new starter/ solenoid....the one I have looks to be original.

BTW - I opted for the AC Rapid Fire plugs...look forward to seeing how they work, just cant start the car right now...:mad:

Yes - the selenoid can be purchased seperately.
However, you will be amazed at the difference a new starter will make. I replaced mine because the mounting casting was cracked. It cranks WAY faster. They aren't that expensive so I'd go with the whole unit if you can afford it.

Just a thought, I had my starter rewound as it was the original. Have a new starter during the process though.

Recommed that you don't give up the old core (starter). Have heard of rebuild starters with screw-up castings, (the part of the starter that bolts to the block), among other rebuild starter problems.

I would recommend either replace only the solenoid, or take your whole starter in for rebuild and not get an exchange rebuilt one. I have gotten rebuild starters that have had windings short or open when hot. They were fine cold but had hot problems. If the old one works fine, I would just get the solenoid though, not only cheaper, but you have the good original starter still.

If you go the solenoid route, take your old one in as there are I think three different length solenoids that could be used. This way you will be sure to get the right one.

I 2nd recommendation of gerry c, just replace solenoid, take starter apart and clean, inspect, lubricate and reassemble.

Yeah just replace the solenoid and the motor brushes( I just bought some for $3 CA yesterday for the vette). See how it works, if it still leaves somethhing to be desired get a new one or get the starter rebuilt.

It took me an hour to tear down( I took it slowly as it was the first time taking one apart) and about 20 minutes to put the new brushes on and put the starter back to working condition. I had previously cleaned the starter. The starter works great on the bench, have yet to put it back in the car.
