TH-350 is really a TH-400 What's the difference
After getting the wrong filter and gasket, I found my TH-350 was really a TH-400. Can anybody tell me the spec difference and quality/durability.

The TH-400 is a hevy duty version of the TH-350. I'm not sure about exact numbers, but it is designed for more torque and HP than a TH-350. Typically the TH-400 was used in big block and heavy-duty towing applications, although there are exceptions. The use of a TH-400 does cause a significant drop in rear wheel HP and weighs more.
Maybe someone will chime in with some numbers and more info, but this is a start I guess. :)

TH350 has a square pan with one corner cut off. TH400 has a pan sorta shaped like Texas. Look, you'll know which it is.

I think the TH-400 was standard on Corvettes with even a small block engine, too.
I beleive also, that the 350 has a mechanical kick-down linkage, whereas the kickdown on the 400 is accomplished electrically, with a wire leading from a switch on the gas pedal, to the tranny.

The TH400 was used in all Vettes from 68-75. It was used on the L82 in 76/77. The TH350 was used on the L48 in 76/77 and all Vettes from 78-81.
I found this piece of info on a Camaro web site:
THM350 - Medium duty 3 speed trans used from 1969 to 1989, Used in Buick, Olds, Pontiac and Chevrolet cars and Chevy & GMC light trucks until 1987. Generally used in straight and V6 and small block engines. Generally able to handle up to 400 foot pounds of torque.
THM400 - The THM400 was GM's Heavy-duty 3 speed transmission used from 1964 to 1990. Used on large displacement, high torque engines and engines with towing packages. Generally found in Chevy & GM trucks, cadilacs and large displacement engined, full size GM rear wheel drive cars.

TH400 is a much better trans. Pretty much "bullet proof".........
The 4L80 GM trans is basically a TH400 with overdrive.

Re: TH-350 is really a TH-400 What's the difference (MassVette)
Thanks everbody for the info, I'll think twice now about changing to a substandard 4speed.
Sunday, I got the bubba out of the transmission pan gasket that Precision Tune did. They stripped a whole and had a bad leak.
