Default Is there a difference between a 69 BB 3rd member and a 74 SB 4rd member stregnth wise?

I broke something in my 3rd member, probably a spider gear or the ring or pinion. I called Tom's and it is over a month wait to get it rebuilt. One of the forum members is selling a 3rd member out of his car. My 3rd was out of an original BB stick shift, I believe his is out of a small block, is there a strength difference.

I don't believe there is any difference. The inner axles of course have different u-joint securing methods (strap or u-bolt) but I don't think there is any real strength difference there either. Just you can't overtighten the u-joint and crush the needles.

You could swap out the axles as needed. They interchange.

No difference at all. By '72, all rears used the HD inner axles with the cap screw u-joint retention that was once the exclusive mark (and only difference) of the HP rear.

Was that "screw U-joint" a coffee spitter? It wasn't intentional.

gerry72,
No, it was the part about all rear ends by`72 having HD inner axels with "caps" instead of "straps". ONLY the HD rear ends (mostly BB) got the cap style rear side yokes.

You may want to check your references, Racer. The use of the cap screw was universal retention on the inner axles for '72 and up regardless of engine option. My car, even with a base-engine had the HD axles which puzzled me for a long time since I could verify the rear was original to the car. Check the AIM and other sources, go ask Joe Lucia, Tom73, and others that have volumes of literature on this.
