Puffs of smoke from my new 383 engine ??
Sometimes when I start up my car from cold I get a puff of smoke (blackish blue) .
Also, When I warm it up good say after 1/2 hour it behaves like this. If while sitting still in neutral I rev the car up to 3500 or 4000 or so and let it off it smokes a little while idling. Now if I shut the car down and wait 10 minutes or so and restart it I get a bigger puff then when it was started from cold.

This motor has only 700 miles on it. Maybe its not even broken in. It is running a little rich, A/F ratio around 11.6 - 12. The mechanic that built it says No problem, Forged parts run looser. He says its nothing to worry about.
Specs of my motor are in sig.
Any thoughts? Will this get better as it breaks in or worse? Should I worry?

Have you checked the plugs to see if its all the cylinders or just one ? I had a similar problem on a fresh small block once, turned out to be bad valve stem seals. Took about an hour and a half to correct using the compressed air in cylinder technique.
Good luck.-

Sounds like valve seals. Try a different brand of oil. Some motors just don't like some brands.

Something is not right. A new motor built right should not smoke. Hell I chiseled all over my pistons and cylinder walls cleaning off all the carbon, then bolted a fresh set of L-98/ZZ4 heads and not a puff. Did you experience any overheating during breaking? Over lean condition? Bad oil leak? 11.0 to 1 is not real rich. Now 8 to 1 is rich.
I would pull all the plugs and read them.
Look at them close and tell us what you see.
I would start there and then take a look at the valve seals.

Check plugs first to find out which cylinders it's coming from. Doesn't this engine have pretty stout compression? Could even be the intake gaskets leaking and sucking it in from the lifter valley.

Before I pulled my motor apart I had puffs of smoke at idle just like what your saying. All I did was replace my stamped rockers w/ 1.52:1 roller rockers and I never saw a puff of smoke again. I didn't even replace the valve seals. So, I don't really know sicne you've got roller rockers and they wouldn't flex enough to change any geometry in the valve causing oil to get passed..so i'm as boggled as you.
