Windsheild wiper nightmare
I just spent the whole friggin day trying to get my wipers to work,
I removed the center console, dashboard, and seats so that I could
get to all the wiring, BUT I CAN' FIND WHATS WRONG!
The relay clicks when I turb them on, but nothing happens.
If I turn them on and then 'help' the wipers by pulling one of
them up and down, they will work, so I figure its either the motor
is bad or not getting enough power...I don't know which...or maybe
it is something I haven't thought of....
BTW, I still haven't found what is killing my battey.
But I did get my headlights so they go up and down again WOOHOO!

Re: Windsheild wiper nightmare (JackCooper)
Mine did the same thing last year. After pulling the dash apart and finding the switch was more then likely good, I went on and replaced the motor. I plug in the new one to verify before going through the extra work. New motor works great, but I don't like taking my baby in the rain often, too many leaks. :smash:

I forgot to mention that the wipers had worked fine right up until
I reinstalled my engine after building it.

Re: Windsheild wiper nightmare (curly)
So you reckon I need I new motor...ughh.
How much do they cost...I'm about to be sick from pumping money
into this thing.... hmmm, could the bad motor be what is draining
my battery you think (probably not, aye?).
I wonder what one from a wrecking yard will be...
Are there any other chevy vehicles that use the same wiper motor (A camaro
maybe)?
BTW, that is NN, not NM.
My computer has a proggie on it that auto fills all input fields with Nonya
for 'none of your business'... that is to keep me from giving out info
I don't need to....I've been meaning to change my profile to be accurate,
just haven't gotten around to it.... I was in a hurry to sign up to the forum
and didn't bother changing the stuff.
I really live in Myrtle Beach South Carolina.
I need the wipers cause I use my vette as my daily driver.
As for leaks, well that is the one thing on this car that doesn't need
fixing LOL! I'm actually surprised about that because the passenger's
side t-top doesn't even go on all the way (could never figure out why
either) It leaves a centimenter gap where the chrome t-bar is visible.
Yet no leaks whatsoever.
Well, after this, I just need to fix the radio, horn, carpet, and paint job.

A new motor was about $55 with the core trade. Should be no way it would drain the battery unless on or switch shorted. Did your battery problems exist before you pulled the motor.

Nope, all the electrical stuff worked great before I pulled the motor.
BTW, the blower motor (for the climate control) has stopped working too.

There is a ground wire that come from the engine wire harness and went to the bellhousing bolt just above the starter. This is the ground for quite a bit of the electrical components on the car. Are you sure that this ground wire got put back on when you replace the engine?
BTW; What did you do to correct your headlights?

I'm not sure, I hooked everything up though...
I'll have to look... a pic of where all the wires
to and around the starter would be really helpful.
As for the headlights, I fixed them by putting the
vacume line on the intake manifold instead of the
carb where I had em (I had the vacume lines mixed
up).

OH YES, the groung wire, for the wiper motor frame and the blower motor frame, plus maybe one other device,....is a large lug on a black wire, and goes/went to a 3/8 bolt....could by it's length be attached in error to the batt cable terminal on the starter....it's supposed to goto ground instead....
I discovered this strange anamoly about vette wiring when I completely redid my wiring harnesses....I corrected all that confusing crap .....;-))) :D

I had a 71 that gave me fits with the wipers. It turned out to be a bad ground at the switch. After I ran a wire from the swich to a good ground I had no more trouble. :yesnod:

Agree with others. I would offer 2 other thoughts. You say that they will work if you give them a pull. First, I would check the vacuum relay that is under the passengers side wiper. There are a few vacuum lines and a "bellows like" spring loaded plunger. Check that. Second, check to see that the switch on the dash is grounded. Often the console is broken in the "thin area" below where the switch mounts. If that area is separated, the switch won't ground and complete the circuit. Chuck

Re: Windsheild wiper nightmare (Chuck Gongloff)
Woohoo, I got them working!
It was the ground after all.
But now, the switch positions are messed up,
Like the off position is in the middle of the switch,
and the other positions are out of order
At least they work, hehe.
Since I had taken the dash and all out anyways,
I decided to go ahead and fix up my interior.
I dyed my carpet (it was faded out big time) and
I'm redoing all the trim peices (including the dash)
with some vinyl paint I bought at Advanced.
Its looking real good.
