Pic. of Bad Main Drive Gear
I took the trans out as it was grinding going into 4th gear at any thing above 3500 rpm. i had this problem last year with 3rd gear now this year 4th gear. As you can see not a great picture but the teeth are not supposed to be shiny. They are also supposed to be somewhat pointy so the syncro can mesh with it. Mine are quite rounded. Time for a new main drive gear. I was thinking about a 5 speed to replace this and might still do it but I should fix this also.

DO NOT toss the old one! I've built a ton of these, and for a bit of labor, these can be dressed to work like new with a new syncro ring. It's actually the tapered inside of the brass ring that goes first, allowing the steel teeth to grind each other. A new input shaft is preferable to that one, but for a guy on a budget or a race trans, it'll work great. We used to grind off every other tooth off of 1st and 2nd, and make the fastest shifting trans you ever saw. The remaining teeth would not last long, but every advantage....

It actually worked OK but at upper rpm it ground a little going into gear. Normal driving it shifted fine and smooth. I had thought of dressing it also but that would be a short term fix. After I get it fixed if anyone wants it let me know.

Gordonm,
You seem to know alot about these trans. I just recently finished a muncie rebuild and have a question for you. After putting it back together I noticed that the 2nd gear had a little bit of forward to rear slop in it. I didn't pay close attention to it when taking it apart. Does this sound normal to you or do you think something is wrong? When I manually put it into gear and hold pressure on it the slop is minimal. The other gears have very little slop in them. Can you help me with this?
Thanks, Steve

Is the slop in the shifter handle. If it is the linkage might need a small adjustment. If it is in the lever action (linkage disconnected) you might have a worn shift fork or the clutch key spring is bad along with the clutch keys. I doubt these are bad and the 3 4 shift fork is usually the worn one. Unless they were put back in in a swapped position.

It is the gear itself. I checked it before I put the shifter plate back on. In neutral I could move the gear about a 1/4" front to back. After it goes into gear and pressure is held to it there is no more movement/slop.

I just went out and checked mine. Are you talking about trying to push the gear back and forth on the mainshaft. I have a little clearance about 1/16 of an inch. Not 1/4. that sounds a little to much. are you sure you got all the snap rings and correct syncros back on. That sounds a little to much.

I may have over exaggerated a little. It may have been about a 1/16", but it seemed like a foot after I had worked on it for two days and finally got it back together. I am pretty sure I got everything back in the right place. I am bad for checking things over and over again (paranoid). I was just comparing it to the other gears which are pretty well snug in place.

Gordonm,
Thanks for checking your gear box for me. Some relief now that I know that there is supposed to be a little slop in that gear.
