Cam installation. To advance or not to advance, that is the question?
Ot's almost time for my cam to go in. The timing chain has three choices, neutral, 4 degree advance and 4 degree retard. I have an article about rebuilding an L-88 and they said they went with a 4 degree advance for "reasons they didn't have space to cover at this time."
I am told that advancing the cam adds more to the top end and hurts the low end. I think I have also been told that advancing the cam is a way to improve emissions.
ASsuming my second statement is right I am wondering why they chose to advance the cam in that rebuild, was it for performance or emissions.
Regardless of the article, what would you do? Advance 4 degrees or neutral?
Thanks

If my memory still works, I thought that ADVANCING the cam improved low end. "Retarding" it improved top end.
Regardless, big HP numbers are impresssive but I would go for where my engine spends 98% of its time and boost the bottom end.

Advancing the cam 4 deg will improve the bottom end. You really need to dail it in if you want the most power.

Check your cam specs. Many aftermarket performance cams already have 4 degrees of advance ground into them for that purpose. If in doubt call the cam manufacturer and ask them.

Advancing the cam will increase your low end performance.
I would go with the 4 degrees advance as you will probably loose 1/2 of that when the chain stretches.
It would be a good idea to degree the cam to manufacturers specs and I would also check with the manufacturer about advancing the cam.
Just my .02

Just put the thing in straight up and don't worry about it.
