Default Oil pan gasket: Small question.

I installed my oil pan gasket today. And the rear oil seal by the crank sticks out about 1/16 of an inch. Just on one little corner no longer than a tic-tac. It's only on that end. It's all flush and not showing everywhere else. Is this going to be a problem? I had to drop my pan to change my cam. And I was the only one putting the pan on while the motor is still in the car. I just don't want an oil leak. I'd take a pic..but it's not going to happen tonight

Thanks,
Aaron

Are you saying the the rear part of the gasket next to the endcap or the cap itself covering the rear main seal is not flush?

Regards,

Jim

It's a 4 peice gasket. the rubber seal on the front and the back and two cork seals on the sides. The back seal has two little inserts for the two sides to to tab in. but it's just a really small portion sticking out. If it leaks i'll have to replace it in auto shop on the lift, because it's a PAIN IN THE butt to do it w/out the car being raised. :mad and by your self.

Get yourself the new one piece gasket. Its so easy to install. The felpro gasket kit even comes with those little plastic helper screws. They screw into the corners. Then you slide the gasket and pan over them, and they support the pan about an inch from the block until you start attaching the bolts. They also act as guide screws lining up all your bolt holes in the pan to the bolt holes in the block. Plus, its one gasket. I'm telling you, it will make you life so much easier. Check your local supplies or call Summit Racing. Make sure you get a gasket that includes those little plastic screws(guide pins). And the gasket is reuseable. I have reused it about 3 times already.

Jim

Man, if thats what you used, I feel your pain. Having to install all 4 gaskets is a pain in the @#$. The one piece is more expensive ($25-$30) but well worth it. It should not be to hard to pull the steering. Just remove the bolts from the idler arm and pull it down as far as you can. Thats all I did to get the room to drop the pan. First, you may want to start the car with your existing gasket and see if it leaks. If not, just go with it for now and change it later when you are back under the car for another project. If it leaks, you know what to do. Also, the one piece gasket does not require any sealant that you have to remove the next time you drop your pan. Makes it more clean under there.

Jim

I believe your 74 is the same as my 73, oil dipstick on the drivers side. Assuming thats the same, the Summit cat # is FEL-0S34509T $33.99. Good luck! There phone # is 800-230-3030.

Jim
