700R4 and Cross Member
So I ordered the Cross Member from Bow Tie Overdrive that goes with the 700R4 and I go to put it on and the tail shaft on the tranny hits the cross member bar and there is a 1/2" to 3/4" gap between the tranny mount and the mounting plate on the cross member. Any one else have this problem with this cross member? Can I cut off what looks to be a mounting location on the tail shaft of the tranny? I would love to have this cross member work.

Your pictures aren't showing up. I have the crossmember on mine and it was a perfect fit. I wouldn't start chopping things yet.

Re: 700R4 and Cross Member (TedH)
Sorry about the pics. I just received an e-mail from Steve Holmes and he said I could cut the tabs off or he would send me a different tail piece.
I'll cut the tabs off this afternoon. Rod

Hey Rod, hows your new family member doing ? I want to drive my vette to Bowling Green in May so I plan on doing some driving before hand so I may take a trip to Rochester once the weather breaks and the car's all back together :D .

Re: 700R4 and Cross Member (Red73)
sorry I can't help. I fabricated an adaptor to work with my stock cross member. My 700r4 is out of a 84 vette - I'm not sure if the tail peice is the same as yours

Re: 700R4 and Cross Member (Red73)
I made a new crossmember from a 8x8cm standard steel profile.
With cutouts for dual exhaust that runs straight back from the Dynomax headers without interfering with the transmission.
Pictures in the 700r4 article at the tech section at my site.
My original plan was to modify just the trans bracket on a 1976 crossmember that I found at a wreck yard, but it didn't fit my 1980 frame mountings, also the right hole for the exhaust was covered by the 700r4.
This was my first attempt with my new Mig welder (no former experience) and took a day to complete.
Should have bought a MIg years ago, they are very easy to use.
Will post some pictures of the crossemember/exhaust later.

Re: 700R4 and Cross Member (faster69)
The standard cross member that BTO supplies didn't work with my Pace Car. It caused the drivetrain angle to kick up, causing the fan to hit the shroud. It was sent back and to here BTO talk, they had never had that happen until my car and get this, one 76 they were doing in their shop at the very same time. They reworked another cross member and that one worked. What a gigantic PIA.

Re: 700R4 and Cross Member (sd pacecar)
Ever since i put the BTO crossmember in my 71 a have vibration at about 45mph and faster. I have not had a chance to troubleshoot yet because other projects have had the car down. My best guess at this point is with the crossmember. There is a little left to right adjustment I'm going to try before I go too far. It seems I remember having to shove the transmission one way or the other to get the crossmember bolts in. I'm thinking this may have caused enough of a misalignment to cause the vibration. Anyone else run into this?

Cross member is in thanks to help from Steve Holmes from BTO. Smokedtires, Let us know when your coming to town. The new addition is doing great, all the way up to 7 pounds 7 ounces. Rod
