L-88 Hood, long or regular style for 71?
In the process of building my rat motor and need to get a L-88 style hood for clearance. What should I get, the normal style hood or the longer one that replaces the wiper door? Is it a big deal to get rid of the wiper door. My door does work fine now, but I know that they can be a real pain in the butt!

If your wiper door is working fine now, then get the short hood and keep the wiper door. It's far more complicated eliminating the door and if you keep it on the car and functional, then you don't have to find a place to store all the pieces or figure out how to put it back on when you realize the mistake you've made. You also have to do body work if you go to the long style since the fenders will not match the hood profile at the rear.
I would say the long hood is only an option when you don't have a functioning door system, missing a lot of parts and you don't have the heart to make it right. Otherwise, it is far easier to bolt on the short (or should I say more "correct") length hood.

Since I finally got my wiper door working, there is no way I would take it off and put a long hood on. This one of the things that makes these cars kinda different and special from the later vettes. But this is just my opinon. Do what makes you happy. I do like the L-88 hood.

Short, for all of the reasons above!
BTW, have you run the engine yet with the Crane 296-2 cam? If so, how do you like it?

Ratman,
If you go long, you should check to make sure it`s a long hood for a`71 as i think the `73 and up (long style) fenders are a little different at the back as the `73 hood curls up slightly. ....redvetracr

Stay with the short hood if your modified engine will still have good vacuum. The L88 has only about 6" of vacuum at 1200rpm compared to 15-20" for normal cars. The rain will be over before the wiper door opens with such low vacuum.

Hi Terry, Thanks for the info, where did you get the hood from? Do you have any pictures of it? Thanks!

Go for the short hood, that is what I am doing. Also tell us about how the cam performs etc.

Hey Tom!
I think one of the coolest things about the early Sharks is the wiper door.
Keep it!
