Default Stupid Question of the night....[Rearend gears]

Not being the most knowledgable person re: vette rear gears...I know that the vette rear was Dana manufactured (correct?) at least the ring and pinion. What makes the vette r&p different than say the GM standard 10 bolt? and why aren't they interchangeable. Are the posi carriers different also?

The reasoning behind the questioning is this...I have a HD 4.11 rear I want to gear down to maybe something in the 3.42, 3.55 range, and am trying to determine where I can get my r&p from...vette rear only, or any GM 10 bolt. Also, why did GM earmark HD rears from the others...are the spiders stronger? center sections stronger??

Thanks as always....

I can't answer most of your questions, but here's what I think I know. I thought the dana's came only in C4 and later cars. The rear ends (inlcuding ring and pinion) are different than a standard 10 bolt and they do not interchange. i don't know what internally causes the difference. Vette rears only interchange with other Vettes of the same era.

I believe that vette ring gears are of a different diameter and are held to the carrier with more bolts (just my understanding not authoratative on this one)

Just for reference my 1980 L-82 has a Dana 36/44 in it. It a hybrid of a Dana 36 and a Dana 44. It's hard to find the right parts for it.

Only the vette gears will fit the Vette rear. If you have 4.11 gears you have a 4 series carrier. If you are going to go to 3 series gears you will need to change the carrier also. The HD rear gets you bolts on the yokes instead of the straps on the yokes. The rear pumpkin is the same.
