My wifes 82 has only 26576 miles on it. I don't believe it has ever had a tune-up. Last year it was running a bit ragged. I'm going to take it to a chevy dealer in the spring for a tune-up. Should I get the wires replaced? I don't know if they just break down with age. What do you think? :flag

Yes I'd give it a tuneup if it hasn't ever been tuned up that you know of...... I'd change sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, all your radiator hoses, all your belts. Rubber deteriorates with age, replace it all and start from scratch.


P.S. Its not hard to do it yourself and save some money!

Although your 82 does NOT have a lot of miles on it, it still has 20 year old plugs and wires. I personally always replace the wires when I change the plugs.

As far as taking it to a dealer, there are probably going to claim it needs alot of different things. Try and fine a hometown mechanic you can trust, I am sure it will be cheaper!!!!!!

Your car sounds very original. I would not disgard any of the old parts as they are probably not available with the orinial markings. You may decide one day to try your hand at getting your car NCRS Flight judged.

I would suggest that you talk with Lars. He can answer any of your questions concerning tune-up. He also provides a distributor up grade service.

If you have to ask, yes! :) A simple tune, new plugs, cap, rotor, won't cost much and can make a big difference in performance but only a small difference in you wallet.

I too would avoid the dealership if at all possible. Unless you personally know the mechanic as friend or family or somethin. Spark plugs and oil change are the two most important items in my opinion.
