Open Headers...safe?
I know this topic has been asked numerous times, but i was just wondering how safe it is to drive the car with open headers? I need to get the car to the muffler shop (20 miles) Is there any problems with heat??? Wouldn't the exhaust coming out right by the tranny kind of be problematic? Or the floor boards for that matter, wouldn't it roast your feet? Any input is greatly appreciated, i have to take the car in tommarow, and i lost my truck to haul it in on :( So its either drive it, or wait another week.
HELP! :)

It will warm your feet some but since you're only going 20 miles I wouldn't worry about it. I'm mostly sure it won't do anything to the tranny.

I think the only problem you might have is with the law... I drove my car with open headers once--loved the sound, but was really scared of being caught by the men in blue. When I had to take my car to the mechanic (~15 miles away, mostly in-town drive) to have the pipes installed, I called AAA, and they flat-bedded my car--no questions asked.

I'm going to be running open headers with my 468 big block :yesnod:. I will run open headers until I have the $300 to get the JCL spiral baffles. My buddy ran open headers with his 460 big block and the cops never bothered him.
I would say if you are only running it to the exhaust shop I wouldn't worry about it....just don't "stand on it" whenever you see a cop.

:D as long as it's not past reasonable hours (9:00 or so) nobody seems to mind. Plus I live on a hill, so if I decide to go out for a late night cruise all I have to do is push her out of the garage and coast down the hill until I hit main street where I can fire her up :). As far as in town driving goes I don't foresee any real problems. My buddy ran open headers on his 460 every time he went out cruising....and his exhaust was ILLEGAL (it didn't exit from under the chasis), mine will at least be legal (Hooker side pipes). :D

Running open headers shouldnt hurt anything but oyur ears on the way to the exhaust shop. I took mine for a cruise with open headers when i put mine on a few months aga just for fun. They sound real nice at 120mph. :D

No problem driving to a shop w/ open headers. Several  of us have done it. Just don't get on it around the cops, you can go to neutral & idle by.
