Default Stock deckheight and quench for a 1979 350 engine ?

I under stand that I should try to get the quench height to about 0,040. But my 350 from 79 has a deck height of 0.050 + 0.040 gasket =0.09 quench. Maybe GM used thinner gaskets at factory but quench would still be around 0.07 did GM make it wrong ?
If I mill my block 0.050 to acheive 0.0 in deck height will my intake ports and intake bolt holes line up afterwards ?
If I use the 1094 felpro shim gasket do I need to retorqe it after a few miles ?

Shark;

Gm would have use a steel shim type head gasket simailar to the 1094 felpro. It has a compressed thickness of 0.015 so with your 0.050 deck height you would have a quench height of 0.065, which is about right. This would work good for iron heads. If you have aluminum heads then you would want to use a felpro 1010 with a compressed height of 0.039. Neither of these gaskets require a retorque if used with iron heads but it is best to retorque the 1010 if you use them with aluminum heads.

If you decide to use the 1010 then I would deck off about 0.025. Taking it to 0.0 deck height would be playing it a little close with only .039 quench height.
Taking off that amount will not affect intake manifold alignment.

I have a rebuilt 350(+.040) with stock style dished pistons(12-14cc) and '88 5.7L 64cc heads milled .008/1.94-1.50 valves. My deck height is .030 and I am running 1094 gaskets. Don't know how much of an issue quench is if you have these style stock pistons because the dish kind of negates the quench effect. The math on mine works out to about 9.5:1 now and it runs great. I have about 1Kmi. on this setup and have not retorqued my heads. Also, I hosed the gaskets with the aerosol copper gasket sealer(about 3 coats) before installing them. You might see about having your heads milled a little to bump compression, along with using the .015 gaskets. It's easier/cheaper than having your block decked, unless the thing is already out and dissasembled. Just my $ .02.
