Default Old St. Louis Plant?? Where/Was It??

Thinking about a trip to St.Louis soon. While there I would like to cruise by the area where th plant was. Or is the building still there? Any history or info would help. Thanks, L8TER, Paul.

Vettesic..I believe Gary Gruhala was an employee at the St. Louis plant and he may be able to help you in this matter. BTW his shop is also is a great place to get Vette stuff (and he's a stand up guy to boot:))
His website: http://www.angelfire.com/mo2/GruhalaEnterprises/
His e-mail addy: Gruhala@jcn1.com

Hope this helps...I would be interested in knowing where it was as well...

Vettesic,

The plant was located at Union Blvd. and Natural Bridge Blvd. in St. Louis... The building that housed Corvette final assembly plant was torn down years ago, but I believe other buildings in the complex still remain. I'm sure one of the map searches available on the internet would help you get a good idea of where the plant was located in St. Louis.

There are a few people over on the NCRS Discussion Board who worked there (and quite a few others that have been there). You might want to post your questions there... They have some GREAT stories! :)

Regards,

Drove to the NCRS Convention in St. Louis a few years ago in the 69. Wanted to drive by the old plant too. My wife and I, and another friend in his 62 headed to "downtown" St. Louis. We were driving around looking for the plant, when a police car pulled us over :). He wanted to look at our cars. Anyhow, we "BS'ed" for awhile, and then the St. Louis police officer lead us to the site of the old plant...torn down many years ago. Still was neat to see the "site", with a "police escort" and all. There's an aerial view of what was once the Corvette plant at my website:
http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/neo...ette_plant.jpg

I live nearby and I've been by there. Not much to look at now. No commemorative plaque or anything. :(

Long before Corvettes came along, it was a production facility for Chevy Trucks. Much of the Corvette production took place in a basement of one of the buildings. Even then, the building was old, dark and considered one of General Motors' worst places to work. Although some of the buildings are still there, the Corvette building was demolished in 1992. :(

Pete Licastro's book, "Birthplace of Legends" is probably the best (and only) source for the origin of most C1s and C3s and all C2s.

BTW, I'm fairly certain that Gary Gruhala worked at the Wentzville plant, which is about 20 miles West of St. Louis, just off I-70. :chevy
