Same old questions..on cam, intake, performance stuff
sorry for the long post i need to rant.......I was looking at getting the ZZ4 at the end of this summer, but I think thats over my head as fare as my budget. Having two cars to work on gets a bit pricey, when no job, and going to school. My list for my stock engine is, new cam, manifold, rebuild carb, and electric fan. What do you all suggest for parts, and what other things would you guys add, or where would you start first etc. Im tired of leaving the vette at home on race days because I dont want to be embaresed by my friends 99 v6 wustang on NOS (i get alot of trash talk from him). Not to mention trucks takin me, I dont mind my friends r/t though. I guess what im askin for, is what would your list be on a tight budget? Just need to get pointed in right direction. Thanks.

Ganey,
I have a 4 speed manual. My a/c has been removed by previous owner. How do I find out my gears? Thanks, Paul

Wow, glad im not the only 19 year old with a C3... i bought mine too.
anyway if your able to pull the motor and change the cam, that would be a great way to gain power. Get a torquer cam, advance the timing a little, and get some 3.73s for the rear end and the car should pull nicely. or buy NOS. :D

Paul
W/ your manual trans., Comp Cams 268H which will work w/ your stock valve springs or XE262 which needs matching springs. A Performer or Weiand Action+ intake. Moroso makes an intake heat shield for under the manifold. Advance timing to 12-16 BTDC & recurve dist. w/ lighter springs so all in by 1800-2500. A stock non a/c 5 blade clutch fan is a cost effective solution. One thing to be aware of is that a conversion of energy loses so mech. to elect. (alt.) loses & elect. to mech. loses (el.fan).
Do you have or want headers?

Blues77,
Just had my motor rebuild. In order for you to increase hp significantly you might want to raise the compression with some new pistons. I'm running flat-topped hypereutic piston with standard heads, which results in compression about 9,5.
As I understand, changing the manifold really won't give you that much power.

Increasing the C/R slightly from about 9 to about 9.5 will not have a significant effect on HP. The intake by itself only helps some as you say.
A cam can make a day & night difference. It can make your car run like a CORVETTE.

True, there is no such thing as free energy. Physics happens.
But... electric fans don't run all the time. With an engine driven fan it's always sapping power.

Ganey,
What would be the advantages/disadvantages of the XE262 with springs to the 268H? I was considering headers later on after I start making some HP. I need to take my stock exhaust manifolds off to put some new studs in, is there any filing that can be done to open them up?
I haven't seen many posts of roller rockers, is that to much with a aftermarket cam? not worth it?

Mainly the XE has more ex. duration. Cost since you need springs for XE. Even exp. work on the manifolds yields little gain.
Rockers
The increase is due to the increase of rocker ratio as stock measure about 1.47 so even 1.52 is an increase. All you need is the roller tip which fit under the L-82 Al. valve covers. Roller tip will help reduce valve guide wear. W/ 268H & 1.52 this maxes out stock springs safe lift @ .460. Full rollers are not worth it for your setup. Cam should be done even before roller tip for performance.
