Default TH400 to TH700R4 - What needs to be changed?

I have a '75 coupe that came with an automatic.

I know that (1) the driveshaft needs to be shortened and the mount is in a different place, so (2) the frame crossmember needs to be moved back. Is the crossmember bolted in place or is it welded?

What about the shifter? Does it line up with the TH400's or will the tunnel need to be cut? What's the simplest way to replace the stock shifter and make it look decent?

- Shorten drive shaft
- move rear trans mount rearward, no movement of the crossmember
- Kit is available for the shifter that will allow access to first with the shifter.
- Not sure about speedometer connector or trans kickdown.

In the case of your car youo are going to have to string a TV cable from the carb to the trans. If your vette the original q-jet on it you may need to get a different carb. Mine did not have a boss for the kickdown fitting. I ended up using a baseplate off a 79 for my car. I am not using an Edelbrock 750 performer which will run a kick-down/TV cable. You are also going to need a different output yoke as the TH400 has a different output shaft than a TH350/TH700.

The bowtieoverdrives.com (BTO) site has a TV kit for every carb and that's where I learned about the yoke difference. The kit to convert the console to the four position pattern is very cool.

I still don't understand how you can move the mount without moving the crossmember. Is there a special offset mount that can be attached to the crossmember in its stock position? BTO has a custom tubular crossmember that replaces the factory one and relocates the emergency brake cable ($179).

I looked at BTO site and their TV made EZ doesn't mention Quadrajets. In 1977 the Th400 came with the L82 and it had a different carb than the L48/TH350 cars. I am not sure what was on the Quadrajets for 1975.

As far as the shifter, I spent 20 minutes with a rat tail file and installed a lens out of an 82 CE car. I get first gear access with no problem. Would guess that the shifter mechanism itself for Pre-77 consoles would be the same.

Oops. Yeah, you're right - no Q-Jet. Well, that's okay - my motor has a Holley on it now (I replaced the carb when I did my last engine swap) and I'll use a Holley or a Carter after the motor and trans are swapped.

In 1975, even the L48, my car's original motor, came with a TH400.

Thanks for the photo.
