Rebuilding A/C Compressor
I took out my original A/C Compressor to install new headers. The Compressor seems to work but there is tremendous friction on the bearings that tries to kill the engine. I believe the problem is that the bearing on the compressor (where the belt connects) are causing excess friction. Has anyone replaced any of these bearing so that there is less draw on the engine when the A/C is turned on?
Thanks for your help.

I have done a few.
The service procedure varies depending on which compressor you have.... axial or radial...
Basically, the clutch is removed with a special tool to get at the pulley bearing.
The inside of the compressor also has several bearings, but you must evacuate the refrigerant to service them.
When the clutch is disengaged, the pulley should spin freely.

If it's the original R-4 or any A-6, it would be worth saving. A-6's are good compressors; R-4's are junk. If it's already a replacement R-4 (which is likely), just get another one.
