Default Question about Protect-O-Plate stamp...

Looks like one of the stamps is a date code, but it reads backwards from date stamps you find on parts. It reads “P8E23.” Any idea what this means? If this was the cars completion date that would jive with the block date, but not the alternator or starter. Your thoughts?

BTW, according to the original owner he ordered the car. It was not simply bought off the lot.

Block date: E 14 8
Alternator: E 24 8
Starter: E 29 8
Date in service (according to owner’s manual): June 21, 1968

Dave,

The code in question is for your transmission...

P - Manufacturer (Muncie)
8 - Model Year (1968 - this is NOT the calendar year of manufacture)
E - Month (May)
23- Day of Month

The Muncie ID (either "A", "B", or "C") is not listed on the protect-o-plate, although it is stamped into the transmission case along with the rest of this code (and the VIN derivative).

Hope this helps.

Regards,

That is the ID for a Muncie four speed transmission. My protecto plate reads P8D19=April 19, 1968. Yours would be P=Muncie Transmission,(either close or wide ratio). E23=May 23, 1968.

Ah, very nice. Thank you guys very much!... Learn something everyday.

I must say the wide spread in dates surprised me. I guess the completion date was around the 10th of June.

DJ

Dave,

You're very welcome!

Paul,

I think you beat me to the punch more often than not... I have the day off so I have a bit of an advantage today! :)

Yes, I have registered for Asheville, Loughlin, and Des Moines already although the Des Moines/Bloomington Gold conflict may cause me to miss one of the two. I was hoping to have the '70 finished in time for Asheville, but that just isn't going to happen... Des Moines and Quebec will probably be a real push. If everything goes smoothly (what are the chances of that), I might have the car at those two regionals and the national this year.

My intention was to drive the '70 on the road tour to Monterey, but I may need to bring the '69 out of "road tour retirement" for that one!

Looking forward to seeing you in Asheville!
