how to get a smoother ride
i was wondering what the easiest way to get a smoother ride is..i really feel the bumps in the road and was wondering if this would be remedied by replacing the shocks or is this a whole suspension thing??

One of the best things to come along for C-3's was the "glass rear spring. Replacing the rear spring with a standard composite spring will dramatically improve the ride and handling plus you will notice a big difference in road noise's, squeek's, groans associated with the steel spring. It is well worth the money and is an easy job. :D

Paul Lisinsky at VB says that 80% of a c3's ride quality comes from rear spring selection. I like TRW 315# on my 71.

The VB springs actually ride better than the TRW, they can also tailor the spring rate to your needs. We tried both and the VB spring had less arch which decreased pre-load and made the ride better. You also have to match the shocks to the composite springs and for the application and the ride your looking for. :flag

I tried 3 different VB springs. 2 360 lbs and one 315. They all rode like crap. Bounced all over the place. Tried 4 different shocks. KYB, Monroe, etc.
Finally tried a 2.5" wide 9 leaf steel (the one on later C3's), and now it rides like it should.

How do the body mounts look? Dry rotted and hard, maybe? I need to replace the ones on my '75, and hope that it will ride and sound better if I do that.

Re: how to get a smoother ride (zwede)
I had the same bouncing problem at first with my 73' with a #330 composite and the original style monroe's. I called the tech line at VB and they said it was because I didn't match the shocks correctly. They said the composite's have less friction than steel which will make it ride better but if the valving in the shock wasn't designed for composite or have enough control to keep it from bouncing you might as well be riding on a bunjy cord. I used the Bilstein sports and it now rides better than I could have imagined.

I also called VB, and they told me to use their specially valved KYB's. I did, and it bounced just as much as the monroes. Maybe bilsteins are better, but I'm not willing to spend the $$$ to find out.

Re: how to get a smoother ride (zwede)
The special valved KYB'S are still an economy shock and are only good for up to #330 spring. I opted for the Bilsteins because it was iffy with my higher rate #330 at #338 rate. ;)
