getting head question
figured that title would get some attention.
I'm trying to figure out what style head would help me get more power out of my 327.
I narrowed my search down to 3 choices (all 64cc with 2.02/1.60 valves)
World Products Sportsman II cost 800 for the pair.
GM vortec fast burn cost 1100 for the pair
Friends Fuelie heads (off mid 60s 327) ported/polished, cost 250 for the pair.
not bubbatised either..
by my calculations I am around 350-375 hp.. what would you do if you were in my shoes. (I'm trying to get 400 at the crank)
I currently have 1.94/1.50 valves with 64cc heads on the car currently

I am getting my new Sportsman II heads from the engine shop this week.
This is what my good friend and race engine builder relayed to me. He
says the bare heads are good but that's about it, he ordered new bare heads and is putting his selected hardware on them, Comp Cam springs, 1.6 : 1 rockers etc. He is also doing a three angle valve job and installing bronze valve guides. This adds to the cost and the heads will end up costing well over $2000

2G ouch!! i want to spend as little as possible.. (college is coming shortly, along with new daily driver) so the whole 3 angle valve job wont be happening. :(

I was just on Jeg's web site a few hours ago and noticed that the Dart "Iron Eagle" heads are on sale right now. 357.99 for complete heads with 1.250 springs, 2.02 / 1.60 valves, 200 cc intake runner and angle plugs.

I'll probably get bashed for this but here goes anyway. IMHO, your current heads are plenty sufficient with 1.94/1.50 on your smaller displacement 327. Switching to 2.02/1.60 could actually reduce intake velocity thereby causing a negitive effect. If simply changing to larger valves is all you do in the process, I doubt you'll gain 25HP. You said you calculate a current 350 to 375hp. Thats a kickin little 327 you got there. :cheers:

well, i thought the same thing when i first had the engine built that 1.94s would be fine, but after the engine broke in, i gave it a few good rips, and it seems that the engine runs out of steam past 4500 rpm. (when the cam,intake are good till 5500-6000) so i wanna throw some bigger valves in it and hope for the best.

Got the Sportsman II's (64cc) on mine and like 'em a lot. Sorry bro, but the reworked standard heads are never going to be up to the modern hi-tech standards of aftermarket heads. I agree big valves and big cfm runners can be a detriment to street cars, but these heads are very nice for the price. My engine rev's easily to 6500 but seems to like shifting at 6-6200. What kinda exhaust ya got? Engines are just air pumps ya know, gotta get the air out or it will not rev. I had the old style 42" glass-paks on mine and couldn't figure out why it stopped revving at 4K. Took 'em off and installed 2.5" turbos.......whoohoo, "to infinity and beyond!" Sorry, been watching too much Buzz Lightyear with the grandkids. :crazy:

I really like the 64cc Sportsman IIs on my stock dished-piston L48 350. But those 72cc Iron Eagles w/180cc intake runners at Jegs sure look like a winner for a 327. Great price! Great features! Probably GREAT performance too!!

I agree with John. The heads that you have now are more than enough for your 327. If you are having problems reving past 4500, than it may very well be a problem with weak valvesprings or a problem with your secondaries. As a rule of thumb, the bigger valves would only be needed on a 327 when you start reving past 6500.

i have the header back mid america chambered exhaust with dynomax super comp headers.. car sounds like a 427 at idle to 3500 :) .
I also havent revved my engine past 6K, but the car seems to really bog before it wants to go anywhere. the cam, and intake are for off idle torque and mid range hp.. so the car should just launch harder then it does.
I'm gunna talk to my friend that owns a speed shop and see if he can get me a deal on those sportsmans

It sounds like a carb problem. Check to see if the secondary flaps are opening fully. They should be nearly straight up and down.
