See the black spot inside the intake? That's a hole to the valley. Never noticed it before. Should it be there?
Oh----the black thing on the lower tight is the camera strap.

  Now that just can't be right. Can it??? That hole goes all the way through the intake into the lifter valley? If so, don't you have a horrible vacuum problem? Or an oil burning problem? That's just weird.

Just a big old guess here - but is that an EGR pad just behind the plenum? If so, might that hole be where the exhaust gas is introduced back into the intake stream? The hole looks to round to be any kind of flaw and it would seem if open to the crankcase (via the lifter valley and oil bleed back holes) you'd be seeing other problems goas diluted oil to say nothing about the vacuum problems mentioned above.
Let us know what you find out.

I have no idea what it is. I guess it could be related to the EGR pad?? I dunno, Bubba put this engine together. Strange things keep showing up. I feel like a "fix-it & clean" up guy.
Engine runs strong since I replaced most of the ignition pieces in the last year. No vacuum, idling problems. I've been thinking of sealing the hole up somehow & see what happens.

That is in fact part of the EGR system - behind the carb is the blocked off EGR pad - dont sweat it - you cant see into the block

Whatcha gonna plug it with? 'Cause if it isn't welded it will soon be in a piston or two.. If you do not use the EGR valve, just plug it at the EGR location, you do not want any 'plug' coming loose. Remember, If it ain't broken, work on it 'til it is!! :D

At the EGR pad, it appears to have never been used----just plugs there.
I took that pic last night, right before I put my carb back on. I'm experiencing no ill effects, so I guess I'll just let it go for now.
