The installer will have remove the chrome peices that go along the sides of the windshield and the hold the pillar weatherstrip. If you don't want him to be the one to be poking the strip than you can do it before hand. There is 3 on each side, I think. My glass guy was gentle, even though my stripping was shot at the time. I didn't even know those screws where there till he took them out.

Might as well inspect the subframe for rot. This is the best time to clean everything up and paint it to prevent rust in the future. Might think about replacing the pillar weatherstripping now.

Be sure they put the spacers under the glass. THE TRIM WILL NOT FIT WITHOUT THEM!!!!! That's what I learned just recently. I am putting my 2nd new windshield in a week in pretty quick here. I agree that if your pillar weatherstrip is bad now is the time to change it. It is also a good time to put a coat of paint on your trim if it needs it. The windshield frame rot always needs looking at too. Hopefully you don't have any. Hope everthing goes well.

Thanks!

Spiru, are your windshield moldings black? They appear to be. I also recommend painting the trim while they are off. Did it to mine with an aerosol can and it looks new again.

Yes they are. I was planning using some black matte paint on them. I just hope they (windshield installers) know what their doing...Safelite Auto Glass is who's doing it and I asked for the OE windshield and they ordered one for me so I'm happy about that.

If you have an auto paint store near you, get SEM trim paint(black). It is semi gloss and matches perfectly. You might be a ble to get it at Autozone, etc. I got mine at an auto paint/chemical store. I used the left over to re-do my rockers too.

spiru, I have that SEM paint # It is Black trim paint, #39143. If you need anything else, let me know.
Fro, when I had mine done 1 year ago, it cost me $160 and he came to the house and gave me time to clean everything up before re-installation.

Duke, thanks for the info, I don't have IM installed I don't think. Anyway the windshield was coved under my Ins, thanks KY state law! I'd say it would have been around $300 if I'd paid for it myself.

$160 bucks!!! Mine was $125 just for the glass and urethane. They told me $300 for them to install it and for the glass. And, they wouldn't come to my place to do it, or give me time to POR15 my windshield frame. You got a steal there.

Maybe Eckler's is date coded.....

Most local auto glass shops will replace the windshield for under $200. The trick is to find one that will come out to your garage to remove the glass, then go away for a week or so while you clean up the frame. Then come back and install the glass. You can do it yourself but getting that glass out is a big mess if you bust it, and it really is a two-man job to get it set in place.

My dad knows a guy who runs a glass shop and he said that it is very seldom that his cost for a windshield is ever over $75. Of course, he is on that PPG autoglass truckload program, and he needs to have a little profit to cover his operating expenses, but most of the cost of a windshield is in the install labor. If you're not into date coded glass, it should be cheaper. If you are willling to do it yourself like I did, it will be really cheap.

So I'm guessing that replacing the side glass would be even cheaper?
