New G-Tech 1/4 times for my 79.
Well, it was such a nice day that I decided to take the vette out and grabbed the G-Tech on my way out the door. My previous best (in similar weather) was a 14.3 @ 101 MPH. I recently installed true dual exhaust and H-pipe so I wanted to know what I would run. Today I ran a 13.96 @ 103. I know that's pretty slow compared to some of you all but I think that's a pretty decent time for the 79. Considering the G-Tech is usually a little high on the MPH due to the way it measures, I think I just might have a chance at hitting 100 MPH at the track. Some of you will get to find out down in Bowling Green. I plan on taking the G-Tech out on the track to see what it says compared to the time slip. Hope I'm close to what I ran today (or maybe a little better). :D

There is more than a Performer intake in/on your L-82 ;) .
The timing has been set up properly for 34 degrees total mechanical all in at 2500 RPM. Also, the 14.3 before exhaust run was with a punched out cat. I ran a 15.7 at a 1/4 track before I punched out the cat but it was also a hot day and at a higher altitude. You'd be surprised how much the exhaust changeover and proper timing helps. I can't wait to get heads and cam. :D
BTW, thanks for the comments, I am happy to be in the 13's, I just want to see what I'll run on the track. Come on March 9th!!

Exhaust makes a big difference. I went from headers to the stock 2 1/2 exhaust to headers and a custom bent 2 1/2 with 50 series Flowmasters and gained 4 mph in the 1/4 mile. Times went down 3 tenths. I'd be interested to see how the Gtech compares to the track clocks

For your interest. Road & Track Magazine tested the L-82 in April of 1979. Quarter mile mile was 15.6 at 91 mph. My best with all the smog connected on a 22-year-old motor is 15.9 at 86 mph. I have only tried the drag strip once but that seems to be the range for stock L-82s. I came close to Road & Track. You must have some goodies inside ;) .

Paul,
I honestly have no other goodies. The engine isn't 22 years old as it had some problems due to lack of maintenance (hint: antifreeze turns acidic after quite a few years and will actually eat through metal) but it is built to L-82 specs. Still wish I had it built with better performance, but I still wanted to maintain some originality and be able to call it an L-82. The RPM manifold was an afterthought after problems with one of the heads. But again, it has been built to L-82 specs. I'd be willing to bet you would be in the 14's if you set your timing up right and changed the exhaust out. However, I think you have too beautiful of an original car to be doing anything drastic. Of course, if done right, the exhaust can be saved and put back on at a later date, and no one would really know if you changed out the springs in the distributor.
I have also removed the A.I.R. pump and injector tubes as well as installed a 3" x 14" K&N. Not sure if that helps or hurts because now the hot air inside is getting sucked into the engine since it doesn't have the snorkels but I didn't have much choice with the Performer RPM.
I really don't think my engine is much better than a stock L-82 if it has been tuned properly (including carb). Like I said, I ran a 15.7 with the stock exhaust, etc. Plus I think the G-Tech is a bit optimistic, that's why I want to get to a 1/4 track so I know for sure. Believe me, I'll post the results.

If you ran 15.7 with the stock exhaust then we are consistent. Yes I have the 2-1-2 with high-flow cat con. Perhaps there is a message here re how restrictive the stock exhaust system really is!

You are right about the ex. Here's some more data for you. Everyone here should know how restrictive the stock ex. is.

Ganey,
I read your topic over a year ago but haven't had the money to do the exhaust until now. Believe me, I wanted to change it right away. :D
Paul,
What altitude are you at? I'm down at 400 feet right now.
