XE262 vs XE268 vs XE 274
What is the sound of one of these cams gonna be like when it is put in a 10:1 motor? I have the 262 but was told I went too small. I have a four speed with 3:36 rear. The 262 is still in the box but the plastic is removed from the box just to see the cam and look at the card.
Just curious. I may go bigger before I use the 262. Any opinions.
(I tried to edit it to say 274 not 272

Re: XE262 vs XE268 vs XE 274 (Eddie 96)
Eddie,
My $.02. I went with the XE262 for my motor. I honestly try to drive my car daily and the low end torque was important. I also wanted a nice flat curve for the gear spacing in the Tremec I just got.
Basically, I gave up 15 HP @ 5500 rpm to pick up 20ft-lbs at 2000 rpm. My torque curve is 392 @2000 and 400+ from 2500-4000.
Basic opinions is:
XE262 - Daily driver w/ 3.36 rear
XE268 - Weekend driver w/ 3.36
XE274 - Weekend driver/racer w/ 3.55 (at least)
If you like I will run a Dyno2000 comparison this evening and send you the results. I don't guarantee numbers but the curves should be fairly representative.

Thanks for the offer. I think I will take you up on that. Take your time I am in no hurry. I just found out I am going to have to spend a month in Alabama working so the engine is on hold for another month or so.

I love my XE262, it's the second time I've used it. It's great around town because it has so much low end. I think you'll be happy with the 262. It has a good lope at idle if that's worrying you.

I've got a XE274 with only a 3.07 rear end and its plenty of fun. It not very drivable while its warming up, but after that it's just fine. Pulls great after 3500rpm.

I called Comp Cams techline a couple of weeks ago, and their rep told me the XE cams are designed mainly for cars with 9.5:1 or lower compression. At 10:1, he said I would be better off with the corresponding high energy cam (e.g., 268H rather than XE268). I'm no cam expert; that's just what he told me.

Eddie,
What heads did you wind up buying? Being a prior owner of a 3.36 4spd 350ci Vette I personally would go with the cam you have.I like to leave on other cars and make them catch me which equates to somewhat better low end than the next step up cam. 3.36 is still a pretty tall gear for a 350ci 3600 lb car and you have a .220 first gear that will not help you get away as opposed to the Borg Warner transmission in the later years.
Probably not 10 hp difference between the one you have and the next step up cam.If it is sound you are thinking of,it will sound nice.Might even outrun the one next to you that has a radical idle :)

Here are the curves from Dyno2000 comparing the cams.
Assumptions:
355 (.030 over)
10:1 compressions
Edelbrock RPM heads (what I have so I used them)
Dual plane maniflod with 750 cfm carb
Small tube headers with exhaust
Like I said before, I looked at how I drove the car and chose the XE262. I think all are good but are you planning on winding the engine out a lot to take advantage of the larger cam.

Re: XE262 vs XE268 vs XE 274 (mdsmith)
Thanks for all the responses. I will just keep the 262 and let it be. I was talking to someone today and they suggested that I keep the 186 heads and have them reworked to include 2.02/1.60 valves. I think I will just stick with the TFS 23 Degree heads.
I did find out that the block has been bored .030 and the bores still have the cross hatching. Tommorow everything will get disassembled.

I think you will be very happy with that cam.A friend of mine runs a HE 268 which is similar in power "it's a single pattern" with a 355 10.1 and 750 Holley with the old style torker and stock unported fuelie heads and daylites both front tires with his CJ5 in a sand drag race.Throttle responce is ultra crisp.Yours should be even better response wise and make more power. If you are using a Holley let me know and I can tell you what jets to run.

Re: XE262 vs XE268 vs XE 274 (Eddie 96)
Im runnin the XE268. Check my sig to see my other mods. Im running at least 10.25 to 1 comp. Im totally honest when I say this. If I were to do a build up again with similar mods, I would still go with the XE268. Its a perfect match for my car with its current mods.

Re: XE262 vs XE268 vs XE 274 (Jvette73)
You have a totally different set up with the 3.90 gear and headers. That does not compare to Eddies car set up.Last I heard he was using stock exhaust manifolds as well
Looks like you have your car running well.

Re: XE262 vs XE268 vs XE 274 (mountainmotor)
I see you point mountain moter. Eddie96 sig doesnt list headers or gears. i myself have never tried the 262 so it could perform well in mine too. The 268 does match well with 10 to 1+ compression though. even with full performance ignition advance ive never had any problems whatsoever with detonation using the 268. Not sure but the 262 might make the detonation issue more considerable. I have 64cc heads milled .015 with flat top pistons so I guess im at least at 10.5 to 1. Thanks for the compliment on my engine tuning. I do believe I can improve on my E.T. without any other mods. Last outing at the track I had poor rear brakes and difficulty holding the car under load on the starting line. I have a stack of time slips here. My new BFG's are already 50% down in tread in the rear. But thats ok, you gotta pay to play right.
