Default Can anyone tell me what this is for???

I was underneath my 76 Vette last night replacing the clutch fork boot. Near the boot and mounted on the side of the transmission was some sort of a connector box with a red wire and a green wire connected to it. The connectors had some sort of soft rubber coating that was badly decayed and one of the wires was so loose it pulled right out. Whatever is there is certainly not functioning. The only thing on my car that I know doesn't work is the alarm system.

Can anyone tell me what this is for? Is this part of the alarm system wiring?

Transmission kick down switch?
Not unless he has a Clutch-Hydro. :) Haven't seen one of those in years.

Edited: I believe the switch is for your TCS. It delays the vacuum advance until you get into high-gear while the engine is cold. You're not at a loss if it doesn't work.

The TH400 used an electronic kick-down switch. The TH350 used linkage. I do not know if the '76 had the 400 available or if they were TH350s only.

You missed the tounge-in-cheek point, Tom. He said he was at the CLUTCH linkage. That being the case, there wouldn't be a kickdown...electronic or otherwise, on a four-speed. :)

I believe that the last year for the THM400 was '76.

I agree with MNJack. It could be your back-up lights switch. If this is it, it should also have a linkage rod connecting this switch to the reverse linkage on your transmission.

The link below (if it works!!) will give you a picture of what this back-up light switch should look like:

I agree, bet it is the TCS. Does the fitting look like this pic?

From the picture I would say it is your TCS switch connector. The wire should run to a solenoid switch mounted next to the carb. Either on a bracket hanging off the carb or directly to the manifod. I have a 71 so the setup is not the same, but the concept is. Some people refer to them as a idle solenoid, spark control solenoid, etc.
