Default 82 sometimes bucks while accelerating, any idea ?

I`ve got a tricky problem with my ´82. On some days the engine surges so
strong, that I´m afraid of an upcoming serious engine damage.
Especially from 1500 to 2500 RPM (while accelarating the car up a slight hill),
it feels like the vette speeds up and slows down in short intervals. When this
occurs I hear a kind of deep knocking sound from the engine compartment and vibrations in the same pulse can be "felt" in the rear axle (if torque converter clutch is engaged)-to me it feels like the car is running out of gas...
Then the car would drive okay for the next 60 miles.(??????????)
The vacuum system has been checked by a corvette pro, spark plugs have been replaced, wires are said to be okay- engine running on all cylinders, but
I do hear a loud ticking noise from the HEI-distributor. Also I have a pretty
poor gas mileage for a TBI model. Does anybody have an idea what could
cause this problem. It´s starting to make me mad ,although it´s not there
all of the time (strange,eh ?) Thanks for any suggestions........

Do you have a new dist. cap? A very small hair line crack could cause something like that under a load.

Boy, that could be lots of things. I had some similar symptoms twice. The first was a bad fuel filter on my Cad. The second was cracks in the distributor casting under the cap on a chev truck. There was a piece inside at about the same level as the bottom of the cap that totally disintegrated when I pushed on it. Had to actually replace the whole dist.

Hi Casper,
the distr. cap has been replaced, the old one had a bad connection for
cyl # 3's spark wire. The mechanic told me he mounted a brand new cap !
Thanx for your reply. Marty

Is the fuel filter been changed anytime recently? If not it sound a lot like a clogged fuel line filter. It also could be a bad fuel pump. you have an electric pump and if it's starting to go bad it is going to give you the same kind of surging and dying out smyptoms. Does the car stall on occasion? againif it does I would be looking at the electric fuel pump. my 84 did the same thing and it wa the pump.
