Is that the one that has never been registered and has 24 miles on the trip???? If so, I could see it selling for a large chunk of changes, maybe even $100,000, though I wouldn't pay that much for it :D :D

No joke. It's only got 14 miles on the odometer and every available option. Don't know if he'll get that much out of it, but it is a very valuable car.

It's almost the 25th anniversary of the 25th anniversary pace car. Some of you may not have heard the stories regarding the release of these cars and the frenzy surrounding their sale up to the Indy 500 that year.

It may be valuable to somebody - to each his own. But to me it's just another butt-ugly '78 pace car.

The problem with cars like this (I'm referring to the almost 0 miles) is that they're no longer cars........they're furniture.

Let's say he finds someone to pay huge dollars for it. Is the buyer gonna drive it home? Not a chance. It'll be a trailer queen forever.

If anyone did start putting miles on it.......what's going to happen to the value?

Like I said.....it's not a car anymore.....it's furniture! :nonod:

It's no joke but it's come down from $125,000. You think the value of your new SUV drops when you register it and drive it off the lot, just imagine what will happen to this one!!! It will go from a one of a kind to one of 6,200 in 2 seconds. The only way you can maintain its value is if you never register it and never drive it. Otherwise you'll lose $75,000 in one spin around the block.  :smash:

Hey how could it be original? its got reclining seats and high performance tires :D - I've got a 78 - it doesnt have reclining seats (the storage compartments wont allow it) and high performance tires - it should have dry rotted old goodyears I would think.

I guess the seats recline from the folded forward position to the straight up position and at some point ALL tires are performance tires. Compared to solid rubber tires? :D :jester

In a recent thread about the NCRS Florida regional, somebody posted that a never titled 78 pacecar was auctioned for $18k !! Now, I dont know the details of what was actually auctioned at what price, but the point is, there is a big difference between "what a car is worth" and "asking price".

Also, I recall an article in one of the corvette magazines about a very low mileage pacecar. The owner would trailer it to shows, and then BACK it onto the show field to avoid putting miles on the odometer. So, whatever you are into, but personally I would not be interested in owning a corvette that I could only drive backwards. :) And what a blow when your cherished museum piece investment that you think is worth $100k only brings $18k at auction.. kind of pathetic, dont you think? Some of you may not have heard the stories regarding the release of these cars and the frenzy surrounding their sale up to the Indy 500 that year.
That's right. There were only supposed to be 300 '78 Pace Cars built. So everyone wanted to get one because they were going to be "highly valuable". But so many dealers requested one, that GM decided to build one for every dealership across the country. Although there were so many made, people still parked them, and put no miles on them hoping that one day they could sell them for at least what they originally paid for them. Many dealerships jacked the price of them to $30,000. You have to remember that this was back in 1978!

BTW, this explains why you see so many near-zero mile 78 Pace Cars for sale.

sounds a bit steep. Although you never know. My dad sold his 63 split window for about 2500 dollars I belive it was... mabye 3,000  But either way its worth a heck of alot more now. A 78 isn't that old yet so it might take a while but you never know.

My trip-odometer equals 0 every time I get gas. Does this mean I can sell mine for $100,000 too?

I've seen that car for sale before. Obviously, the seller is not seriously interested in selling it, but that's. I suppose he [she?] is waiting for someone who wants, as was elegantly put, furniture.

There was a thread on this car many, many months ago -- during the summer I think. My opinion is that the total number of '78 pace cars in existence would have to drop by 90% for the value of that trailer queen to approach 100k.

Good luck seller and too bad for the poor sap that titles it!

Even a car museum would be a better shopper than that... I wonder what Chevrolet would buy it back for??? Or better yet... I wonder how many zero mile cars Chevy has stocked away in some parking garage in Detroit???

It's both cool and depressing to see cars like this. As was stated before. This car is furniture. But to be able to look at something that hasn't changed since 1978 puts me in awe! Personally I wouldn't buy anything like this. I couldn't stand letting it sit and couldn't stand the fact that if I drove it I'd just blow away about $80,000!!!

Neat...but not for me. :nonod:
