Anybody have the Hurst shifter in their 69-79?
Just wondering if they are worth the money ($340 in Ecklers)? Also, how difficult is the install? What do you like about it and what don't you like?
Thanks,
Thanks,

Love it.
Only downside is since it is mounted to the tranny vice the crossmember there is more vibration. Also, unless you buy the stock looking handle, the aftermarket origin is obvious. That said, the shifts are much crisper.
Don't buy from Ecklers. I got the shifter and instillation kit (Hurst has two parts to it) for about $270 from Jegs. I will also probably sell mine after I get the ROD 6 installed and setup properly.

They work very good, I have one. Unless you have side pipes they are a real challenge to install due to the exhaust in the way. :jester

I have one, I love it.
Sidepipes made mine an easy install, if you need an excuse to get sidepipes too! :D

I love mine. Bought from summit. Pictures of the shifter on my web site.

My 70 LS5 had it installed when I bought the car.
Obviously, the little reverse lock-out cable doo-hickey was tossed when the Hurst was installed.
My Hurst shift lever hits the shifter boot when in reverse, which you must still use to remove the ignition key.
The boot is ripped as a result. Don't know if they all do this, but mine does.
I also have a 66 327 with the factory shifter... the Hurst feels a lot more "positive", but then again, the factory unit may just be worn out.

I too have the hurst shifter - wouldtn trade it for anything....well except an ROD or tremec :D
Parts like this, engine parts included should not be purchased at Ecklers - or any of the corvette houses as they all will mark it up too much - jegs or summit will easily beat their price. Also - try to get ecklers to match Jeg's price - not happening

Further to this, how is everyone handling their backup light switch when using a Hurst. I have a Hurst in mine but the backup lights are not hooked up. A switch is available from Hurst but I'm debating if this will work or not. Any ideas out there??

Thanks for the info. I have true dual exhaust so it will probably be a pain. I may wait until I decide to install headers because the exhaust will at least be loose at that point.

They actually vibrate MORE than the stock one? wow, mine vibrates pretty bad as it is. Usually keep my hand on the shifter when highway driving above 80 because the rattling drives me up the wall. Does it vibrate at a lower speed or is it just louder?
As for the reverse light, on my '75 the reverse light switch is bolted to the transmission and actuated by a small rod from the reverse shift lever. The Hurst linkage comes with all the holes to hook it up just like stock.

Do you think a new rubber tranny mount would help at all? Mine is the original but the vette has only seen 34k miles and almost none of that has been on salted or sanded roads. BTW, if you decide to sell your shifter when you get the ROD in, drop me an e-mail and see if I'm in the market for it yet.

I love mine on my 69.
Minor issue is when you go into reverse it moves the whole console over slightly. Yea , they may vibrate more but you don't hear it like the stock one.
** important note. If the one you buy comes with plastic bushings replace these with metal as they wear out pretty quite, especially if you plan on racing.

I bought the Hurst Competition Plus shifter for my M21 in my 69. I love the way it shifts. Very clean and crisp compared to the original that was worn out. I love the chrome shifter and the white ball shifter **** is a classic look. I think it looks much better than stock shifter but that is just my opinion.
