Breaking in cam: Header color question:carb tune.
Dyno-Max says if my car is not tuned right when I put them on, that they will either fade or dis-color. So, If I've got my carb and all that off my engine right now, and I got to put it all back together to break in my cam, how do i be sure my carb is tuned right. Can I tune if before the break in? And I read that if you've got a major upgrade, like exhaust, cam and heads that the tuning will be different. So, can I install it all, tune the carb and then do the break in w/out messing anything up??
Thanks
Aaron

probably... just set it up, so its not running lotsa timing, and not super rich or lean... the goal is for it to get worn together, not messed up

Aaron,
If your car is running lean when you break in the cam, you'll burn the ceramic finish right off those headers. One of the guys here said his dynomax headers were glowing red hot while he was breaking in his cam. Bad news for the headers. Rich is much better for a break in, but not for the long run. I've got a parts store Q-jet that runs so rich that it practically gagged me when I tried running it on the car. That's what I'll have on my car at cam break in, I'll switch over to my Holley after I get it up and running and the timing set and the valve lash reset.
One of the guys up in Houston probably has a junker Q-jet that will make sure your car doesn't run lean during break in.

No, you need to make sure it fires up & break in cam! If the carb was fine before, it should not require tuning for startup.

Probably? Probably he would need a new cam & lifters before the tuning was done.

The only problem with that is. Before I had it all taken apart, it only go to idle. Never drove it to tune it or anything. I didn't know if it was running rich or lean. It alawys just idled in the frame shop.

I'd be more concerned about getting the timing close. Retarded timing can make them headers glow the prettiest red you ever saw! Before start up, be sure that your timing has been lined up correctly and not at 0.

You can always close the choke just a tad to richen the mixture a bit and bring the exhaust temperatures down.

Don't be surprised if the finish dulls a little. I have yet to see a set of Dynomax's that are still shiny. Also, find the biggest fan you can to run into the engine bay. I use a industrial floor drier.
