Has anyone heard of doing this to header flanges.....
to reduce gasket leaks at the head and to prevent the header from warping and unnecessary twisting....cut the flange in between the exhaust tubing to help the header stay flush with the head??
I would think this would exaccerbate the problem. Heard it today and thought :bs

I've heard people say to do it, and I suppose it would help if the flange was very thin and warped ... Of course these are probably the people who still think crossdrilling rotors improves them...

Agree. :bs
Thicker, more rigid flanges are better, if anything.
To reduce leaks, get good gaskets with metal in 'em.

I have heard of this as well... And I'm still not sure about it.. BUT... My '79 (w/Dynomax)'s left header flange was hacked away between 1 and 3 for the temp sensor... Is THAT normal? I hven't had any prob's with that bank YET! Right bank is running lean though...

I've always heard that shotpeening or rotopeening changes the molecular structure of metal and makes it stronger. I wonder if you did that to the flanges if that would work.

Given the gauge of most headers nowadays, I don't think it would be prudent but I can see the somewhat twisted logic which leads to this kind of suggestion.

topless,
I tried it on my racer and it works!! You will be suprised to see how much twist they have when cut.Two cuts per flange with a hack saw (i used a Sawzall) ......redvetracr

I have solved a number of header leaks by cutting between the flanges and have done this to my headers on my vet. I cut almost all the way through from the back to allow the pipes to indiviually seal. Take your header in a vise and hold a straight edge or the edge of a level to the mounting flange and see how flat they are. They are usually warped. You are counting on the header bolts to pull the flange down flat. It is alot easier for a cut flange to be pulled down.
I do not have header leaks and run cheap gaskets and black RTV. I do remove my headers every winter and see no sign of blowing out. The RTV seems to stand up.
