Default Anyone use electric fans only?

Hello-I am thinking about removing the stock fan and radiator shroud and installing two electric fans on the inside of the radiator. It gets really hot here in summer 100+ but as of now my car never gets over 230, a/c on and everything. I like the look of the engine compartment w/o the big old fan and shroud but I do not want to change if my car would over heat. Opinions are welcome! -Travis

I know there are members on the board that are successfully running that very same setup. The stock clutch fan and fan shroud move a lot of air though. Personally I also like the look of an engine compartment without the fan shroud and clutch fan.

A number of people are using the dual SPAL 11" setup with good results. Tom Dewitt (supporting vendor) sell them in a kit that will bolt right on the back of your radiator.

I'm running the dual Spal's and really like them. Also gained more power in the process since the engine doesn't have to slice air thru the conventional setup.

Hi, TJ,

I have a Flex-A-Lite Black Magic (single) fan only. It has its own little shroud, and runs on a thermostat that you can set. It also runs if the A/C is turned on, regardless of the radiator temperature. I've also run wire for a separate switch to run it manually if I so desire.

I've found the key to REALLY keeping your car cool is to put in a really good radiator. I have a nice, thick Griffin custom unit. BeCool also makes aluminum radiators that fit. Expect to pay $400 to $600 for one done up right.

After some of my early experiences with excessive heat after my first engine swap, I decided to go on an Totally Cool mission.

In a nutshell, here's what I did:

1. Griffin aluminum radiator, careful job of sealing around it.
2. Flex-A-Lite Black Magic fan, thermostat set to about 160.
3. Weiand Team G high flow aluminum water pump.
4. Oil cooler, mounted up between the headlight brackets.
5. Roller everything in the engine (rockers, lifters, cam thrust bearing, pilot bearing).
6. Synthetic oil.
7. Tossed the thermostat in the lake (I live in Florida).
8. Thermotec on the exhaust (helps keep heat from radiating).
9. Water wetter in the coolant.
10. Front air dam straight and low.

Now my car runs only about 140 to 160 degrees or so, and at a recent Car Guys track event I ran 30 minutes of hot laps up to 140 MPH with the temperature never climbing above 200 (oil temp maxed out at 250).

I have a 434" smallblock that put's out a measly 460hp, idles like a Harley and is cooled by a 180' theremostat, a smallblock radiator and twin Flex-a-lite fans.
It gets its hottest climbing steep hills at WOT ( imagine that ) and low speed and I've never seen it about 220' at the thermostat ( which is 10' hotter than the 'normal' head temperature.

The spal dual 11's. Best fans! Best price, period $344 with complete wiring harnesses, relays, switch, fuses, etc.

I tried cheap fans and they didn't work well. The Spal fans I replaced them with work beautifully even on 100+ days with my L88.

Hi,

I run with just a single electric fan and no mechanical clutch fan on my 81 and it has never overheated. For a bit of added piece of mind I wired in a switch just incase the thermostatic control failed. Three summers without any problems.

I run 2 16 inch hurricanes or tornados whatever with a 3 inch aluminum rad and never see over 200. I had to mount one fan in front and one behind because of there size. I mounted one high and to one side and the other low and to the other side. I have one on all the time and one switch controlled. For normal driving one does the job but in stop and go traffic the second one is needed.

I'm using stock '95 Camaro Z28 coolant fans. There are some modifications that have to be performed to the fan housing for them to fit into a C3.
