help: water pump and timing cover clearance issue.
I just bought a new chrome Mr. Gasket water pump to go with this new engine that's goin in in a month or so. I removed the waterpump that came with the engine (long) and I held the new one up and it doesn't seem to quite clear the timing cover meaning it leaves a 1/8 - 1/16" gap on either side where it bolts to the block. What should I do? Is it possible to double up (or maybe even triple up) the gaskets? Or do I need a different timing cover, and if I do, what kind do I need?

If the water pump is hitting the cover I doubt it's a long pump!
I have a short pump and I switched some of the screws on the pump to button head screws and then still had to dimple the cover :mad

I would try to get a stock cover. The fit is very tight. That engine looks and sounds nice. A mini starter would look good on the engine and will never let you down.

I just put on an aluminum timing chain cover and it came with extra thick water pump gaskets to space it out. I still had to grind down the bolts that hold the plate to the back of the pump tho'.
