Re: Flowmaster mufflers (VetteBoy1979)
40 series are the loudest..and the only way to go (IMO) for the vette if you get flowmaster. Are you looking for sound or hp? or both? If you are looking for more of a hp gain then you should try another brand like Borla. I have borla mufflers and they are pretty much straight through. You can look in one end and out the other. If you aren't worried about hp then go with the 40 series flowmaster..

Im looking to get some of both hp and sound. I dont want it LOUD...but a nice rumble. Borla is WAY to expensive for this car...$299 a muffler from MidAmerica...OUCH! How much are the Flows per pair...do you know?

Be careful of the 40 series. I had them on my 64 for exactley one day. Had two resonance points that sounded so tinny even the wife said yuck. Very loud and raspy IMO. They sounded great at idle but after that.......gross. Go with the 50 series or the Dynomax super turbos if you want a nice rumble.

Question,
What is the difference b/t the 4" and 5"....does it matter which ones I get?

If you are using the stock 79 exhaust, go with the 40 Series. I have 40 series on mine with stock exhaust (minus converter) and am very pleased with the sound. The converter does a good job at "muffling" the sound.
They were something like $59 at jegs when I got mine.
Good luck!

Re: Flowmaster mufflers (VetteBoy1979)
I am using Flowmaster Deltaflow 40's.
I have been asked about them a few times and below is a "cut-n-paste" of my effort to describe my experience with them.
I think that I emailed this to you a few months back but I will post it in case anyone else may find it useful. I have updated some of it.
MIKER: How do the Delta Flows sound?
do you like them a lot. any advice on if i should get them for my 79. Thanks
Vetteboy,
Yes, to basically sum it up, they sound great to me and I do like 'em A-LOT!
It's very difficult to describe the sound of an exhaust system and EVERYBODY has their own personal opinion of what sounds good and what doesn't. No amount of verbal description can replace hearing them for yourself. I didn't have that luxury because I don't know anyone else that owns a C3. The same exhaust components will sound very differently on different types of cars due to location of mufflers, location of cross over pipes, length of tailpipes, diameter of pipes, headers, cast iron manifolds, engine compression, camshaft selection, gear ratios etc. . .
Good luck with your selection.
Mike
To save myself a little typing, I have cut-n-pasted part of an email reply where I was trying to answer similar questions for another forum member back in August. . .
What cross member did you use and did you have to modify it? I used my original cross member and modified it under the drivers side by notching the cross-member and filling the notch with a section of pipe that we spliced / cut into a "C" shape (this took 15 minutes max to complete). This allowed us to run the pipe straight back along the drivers side. We took care to bend the pipes gently around the transmission pan at to allow access to the transmission oil pan bolts for removal.
How do you like your 40 series delta flow flowmasters? I truly couldn't be happier with the sound of them. At first they seemed too quiet but I think that it is for the best in the long run. I would get tired of "tooo loud" a lot quicker than "tooo quiet"! At idle they sound very DEEP but not loud and they growl pretty good under heavy acceleration.
Are they too loud or is there a lot of internal resonance? I was amazed at the fact that they have NO, none, nadda, ZIP resonance at highway speed. Very easy to carry on a conversation while driving down the highway. They may moan just a bit when the engine is lugged a little when going slow but it sounds GOOD not annoying at all. Man, I wish that I could take you for a ride that way you would know for sure if they sound the way you want yours to sound.
UPDATE (That was while using the 3.07 gears. I have not driven it with the new 3.73 gears yet. This will likely change the way the car sounds at various speeds.)
Do you have cat converters? No, for the longest time I had planned on going with catalytic converters when I finally got to this stage for inspection purposes but I finally decided to go without. Then I was going to make up some "dummy" cats with straight pipes installed through them (and I still might do that). But, I had no problem at all getting it inspected. They didn't even look under it for the visual inspection. That situation is on a case by case basis I'm sure.
UPDATE (After reading the "Texas Inspections revisited" discussion thread, http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=220441 , I am no longer concerned with the catalytic converter issue at all. My exhaust system is out of the car and readily accessible for photographs right now but since the forum home pages are down, I can't post any at this time. )
Why did you go with 2 1/4" pipe vs. 2 1/2" pipe? One reason was that the guy who did this for me (moonlight job done in trade for auto parts) recommended the 2-1/4" pipe. He is truly an exhaust system ARTIST. I'm not exaggerating either. He does know his exhaust work well. He said that the 2-1/2" pipes would give it more of an undesirable "tinnish" or "tinny" sound compared to the 2-1/4". I was still hesitant and considered 2-1/2 but he didn't have enough 2-1/2" pipe left on his rack to do the job.... SOOOO the decision got really easy then! LOL. I'm satisfied with the result and I honestly don't believe for a minute that I am loosing any power due to the "smaller" pipe. My engine is built for sub-6000 RPM. (Maybe a little more! ;) ) If you had a 7000 - 8000 RPM heavy breather meant for racing vs. a daily driver like mine... The larger pipe would definitely make a difference.. Ya know what I mean? Basically I have no scientific data to prove my opinion, It just makes me feel better about having only 2-1/4" pipe... LMAO!
I plan on using 2.5" pipe, no cats, headers, and an H balance pipe. I have an "H" pipe placed just behind the transmission. I've read that technically they should be placed near the header collectors but I didn't have room to do that.
I was going to get the 40 series DF mufflers but Flowmaster suggested 50 series DF mufflers because the 40's would be too loud and raspy because my engine is heavily modified and I would not be running cats. They also told me that 40's df sound raw and the 50's are deeper and more mellow. Wouldn't it be cool to have about 10 C3s lined up each with a different exhaust system for you to test and decide... That is the only way you could ever REALLY know.

Wow,
Thanks everyone for their input, especially, MIKER for the short story :D
I am ordering the SS 2 1/2 pipes w/ converter from MidAmerica today, along with the Flow 40's from Jegs. The manifolds will be installed this week, pending weather, so once that is done, I will record a short clip to let all hear it. Again, thanks for all the input! :chevy

One more thing...
When I ordered my Flowmaster mufflers, I also ordered the connecting piece from your rear y-pipe to the mufflers, and the tail pipes. I ordered them from Allens Stainless. I polished mine to an (almost) mirror like finish.
Have fun and good luck!
