Default 1 piece oil pan gasket, OMG $38?

Geez,I just checked the Summit web site and they want $38 for the Fel Pro 1880 1 piece oil pan gasket. Is this right? Is it that much better than the 1803 $11 3 peice kit?

$38 is a little high. I think I paid $32 for mine. Is it worth it? HELL YEAH. first of all, it's a kit. It comes with bolts and "snap-ups" that hold the gasket in place while you put the pan back on. Also, it's rubber and installs VERY easly, and mine hasn't leaked a drop since I put it on a year ago and requires no RTV. I HIGHLY recommend it.

I ordered mine yesterday along with the new rear main seal that I needed. Should be here tomorrow or Wednesday in the big brown truck.
Another thing to remember about this gasket..... it's reusable.

I just installed my FelPro one piece last week. I compared it to the 4 piece, and I couldn't bring myself to apply those thin four pieces, and use RTV everywhere.
You get the snap holdups and all new fasteners, as the bolts are longer by about one eighth inch, since the one piece is quite thick. It also has metal bushings that prevent overtightening the four corners, if my memory serves correct. Worth the money. By the way, in Canada I just paid 48 for mine.

Try a local autoparts store. I got mine from either NAPA or AUTOZONE for around $31. And yes, it was worth every penny. Sure beats fiddling around with the 3 or 4 piece cork gasket.

FWIW: Sometimes Summit is quite high on the darnest items.....

79MakoL82-
Where did you get yours with bolts included? I ordered pn 1885 from Summit and it didn't come with any bolts. I guess I could have saved a few bucks by going to one of the local places..... doh!

They are 4 platic bolts with no heads. You screw them into the block, then push the gasket up past the indents, and the gasket is held in place, do the same with the oil pan, then put in some bolts, then remove the snap-ups. Makes the install a piece of cake.

Yeah, they're definitely worth it. I just installed mine last week. My kit came from Summit with the gasket, snap ups and new bolts. The snap ups are plastic studs with clips that screw into the 4 corner bolt holes. You put the gasket over them and the clips hold it in place. You then push the oil pan over the clips which hold it in place also until you can start a few bolts. It really makes it easy to install with the engine still in the car. Here's a tip. I had to change mine twice because I bought the wrong one initially. The one listed for 74 and earlier has a thin front seal. I changed my oil pan to a chrome model on my 74 and had to use the 75 and later gasket with the thick seal. Make sure you get the right one or you'll have a major oil leak at the front timing cover.

Bought mine at a local speed shop. Just make sure you buy the kit. I guess it's possible that they sell the gasket without the rest of the pieces, but nobody gave me that option. I just went to the shop, they showed me the part, and I said, "Yeah, that's what I need".

P.S. I just checked the Summit site.

The kit part numbers are:

FEL-OS34509T Chevrolet: 1957-74 262-400, one piece, oil pan gasket kit ... $33.99

FEL-OS34510T Chevrolet: 1975-85 262-400, one piece, oil pan gasket kit ... $32.39

If you want the kit, these are the part numbers at Summitracing.com to order.

OK,
I bought a kit from Auto Zone. The one I bought is NOT the same kit I was looking at from Summit (1880). The 1880 is the "performance" gasket kit, while I just bought the "normal" one. One difference that I know of is the the one I got is not trimmed for strokers. Also, I know the 1880 has a metal core and I'm not sure what the one I got has for the core.

I believe it was $25 - $26 for the kit. It came out to just under $28 after tax.
