Real bad squealing under the hood??????
Hey Guys
Here is one for you. when I rev my engine I get a loud squeal sound like when you have a bad belt. It increases with the rpm`s. I checked the clutch fan it has resistance, I think that is good, I have new belts on it , I have already adjusted them. I am thinking altenator bearing??? My buddy down the steet says all old GM`s do that :bs
Thanks in advice
Bob

Yes that is the first thing I checked. It really does sound like a belt though. Probably that cheap crap at Auto Zone.

Just to eliminate the belts as a possibility, I'd give 'em a squirt of belt dressing--that stuff gives them tack (at least for a while), and should cure any slipping that may be happening because the belts are glazed (or crap).
Also wouldn't hurt to check the deflection on the belts and make sure they've got proper tension. Water pump bearings going bad can squeak and squeal, too.

Thanks
I am going to change tha altenator belt. I have another new one. my buddy is coming to get my lower braket to see if it will fit on his engine. Bubba put his altenator on his car. I have found him a braket like mine. So mine fits he can get his back on the road. I will just put a new belt on while I have the alt off.
Thanks Guy`s

I would check your pulleys, see if you can "SEE" any of them wobbling when the engine is running. Then with it off with the belts loosened, see if you can wobble any by hand. My water pump started making a squealing/ grinding noise last year right before I replaced it, then the noise went away.
On my powersteering pump, the pulley was starting to spin on the shaft & when I checked it by hand (tight belt) I couldn't move it. Well it sheared the key off and I noticed it when it got so bad that it was ready to come off the pump  !

The first thing I'd do is check the bolts on the alternator bracket. Mine have backed out on me twice (resulting in a bolt sheared off at the block :mad ). If they're OK and the belts are tight, it could be a bearing in the alternator or water pump. You might be able to hear that with an engine stethescope or just a large screwdriver pressed up against each (PLEASE be careful of the moving parts  ).
Hope this helps. Good Luck!

That's the reason for measuring the belt deflection instead of just tightening it up till it feels right. That way, as papa bear said of mama bear, it's not too loose or too tight, it's just right. :D
