Default Excessive steering wheel play

Need advice on eliminating excessive steering wheel play. I can rotate the steering wheel from 12 O'clock to 1 O'clock before the front wheel even began to turn. I have replaced all front end components except the steering box. The steering box is the 27 yr old original box. If this is the problem can I rebuild it or should I just replace it.

Check out this article - it tells how to adjust the box among other things.
You use the nut and screw on top of the box. You can also add lube through one of the top cap bolts. http://www.idavette.net/hib/bbfh8.htm

Check out some of the articles posted on CorvetteFAQ:
http://corvettefaq.com/susp.asp

In particular, you'll find very useful the ones written by Jim Shea, on Flex Coupling and Steering Gear Adjustment.

You might also want to check out one of the latest editions of Corvette Fever (January 2002, I think) that has this article: Going through a gearbox. Adjusting the gearbox eliminated all steering wheel play on my 'Vette.

Larry,
Great link. Very informative. I checked that adjustment screw and it's bottomed out. I better start saving up some dough to have the steering box overhauled. After twenty seven years it's due.

Warp 70,
Have replaced rag joint already. But, you're right it will cause the same symptons.
