installing transmission tunnel insulation
I just bought the moulded insulation piece that fits between the transmission
and the car floor(in the tunnel). I have been looking under the car and it looks like a
tight squeeze to get it in place.Has anyone installed this piece and if so are
there any tricks to get it in position? Also where do the 4 clips attach that hold
it in place?
thanx for any help

For some years there are two pieces. A molded fiberglass one AND a molded foam one. Did you get them both?

It's supposed to be installed with the trans out.

Re: installing transmission tunnel insulation (Easy Mike)
The fasteners are little double prong gizmo's. They're usually bent flat when you locate them. You push the insulation over the prongs, and then bend the prongs inward to retain the piece. The foam collar slips over the front top of the trans. I don't think you can get the insulation in without taking the trans out, or at least dropping it. The little prongs are sharp as razors, so watch your fingers. Chuck

I have seen those insulation pieces with a slice in them from the middle to the edge. This tells me somebody tried to fit it around the trans while it was still in the car. Dont know if it can be done, but it has been tried. I bought one of the foam collars and slid it in around the front of the trans, where it sits.... wedged. MJ

Re: installing transmission tunnel insulation (wadey)
I installed mine with the transmission (4-speed) in. I split in into two halves lengthwise with a pait of sissors, slid each half in and secured with the existing prongs. I was then able to tape the seam. It is tricky with only jackstands but on a hoist it would not be tough.
It really cut down on the heat, don't forget the foam transmission collar as well.

If the trans is in the car, it needs to be split. Because you need to take the shifter out, at that point it is only another 1/2 hour and the trans is out.
Shifter takes longer in and out than the trans.
