Default Does a 76 L82 require an A.I.R. system, or is that only a Calf. thing.

Do all 76 L82's come standard with a smog pump or is that only required for California cars? I am looking at an L82 but see no evidence that an air pump was ever there (no empty brackets, mountings or pulley groves).

Thanks! Greg :seeya

I believe that all the higher performance engines, i.e. the L82, came with the A.I.R. system as the A.I.R. took less HP to run then did the other emission systems. If you still have the ram horn exhaust manifold you should have pipe plugs in the air tube fittings. If you have headers, appears that someone cleaned it up real good :D

I think the 76 L-82 did. My 1980 L-82 had the A.I.R. system and the tubes. It mysteriously fell off some time ago. ;)

The 1976 L-82, California and high altitude versions had the AIR system.

Umm, I could be mistaken, but I don't believe the L-82 was available on California Vette's in 1976. The only Vette you could buy in CA at that time was the L-48/Automatic due to smog restrictions.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Luck,
Kurt

That is correct. "The only engine-transmission combination available in California was the base 350cid, 180hp engine with M40 automatic transmission." (ref.-Corvette Black Book.)

This is all true. L-82 non-CA came with the air pump, or at least mine did.

1975 and 1976 Corvettes with AIR did not have the typical smog manifold "T"s in the exhaust manifolds that we are used to seeing. Those two years and those cars that had smog just had one air hose/tube set-up that entered the exhaust on one side only beneath the heat riser. If someone installed a "new" front exhaust pipe assembly, this would probably be gone. Also, the AIR pulley on these cars just fit over the water pump double pulley, so the '75 & '76 can be made to look stock by removing this extra pulley, removing the AIR pump and bracket, and the hose/tube assembly I mentioned earlier. Since these cars did'nt have the "tapped" manifold holes, you can't plug them. The only absolute sure way to tell if it ever came with "smog" is to look at your "original" emission label. Near the top on one of the lines where it says "emission equipment" it'll say "EFE, CATALYTIC, AIR" if it had smog originally. This you can do if you have the label-many times people removed them. I think '76 had them right on the power brake booster.

I did find the front most pulley grove on the water pump empty (3 groves in all). So I believe the A.I.R. system was removed when the headers were put on. I do not know if I will go back to a stock exhaust system yet.
Thanks for all your input! Greg :seeya
