Default big block hood design ?

Hi
Sorry for this seemingly strange question, but I like to know why the big block or L88 hoods had this double hump design.

I think it's for the same reason that the rest of the car has long sweeping lines and sexy curves... it just looks cool!

OK here's the scoop (pun intended) The smaller H.P. big blocks would not fit with the stock hood so they got the standard BB hood. With a different intake and Holley carb, even that was not enough clearance so the L-88 hood was created, With a big block and standard big block hood you can not even use aa aftermarket intake and or carb or even a stock Chevy intake and still be able to close the hood. :D :jester

OK, I understood the deal with the no space available for big blocks under a flat hood, but can't believe that the double hump is for a sexy look only.
Com on, it must have a airflow reason, at least on the L88 !
Any more ideas ?
People are asking this question and I need a futuristic answer. :D

I believe that the original L-88 hood had provisions for sealing around an open air cleaner elements on top of the carburetor. Once the hood is closed the air intake was provided through cowl induction. Most aftermarket L-88 type hoods are just totally open underneath.

Yes, you need an aftermarket long L-88 hood (hi rise) since the stock ones are shorter due to the wiper cover assembly.
I may go w/ 1 sometime. The stock med rise hood works for the sleeper look.

BBC is too big to fit under stock hood.
Had to make my own cowl induction hood.. didn't want an L88 look-a-like..
